Guest sahara Posted October 26, 2008 Share Posted October 26, 2008 on a general note about policing at games. at SJP until a couple of years ago the cops had it sussed,particularly against the inbreds but recently it seems like they've been a shambles. do northumbria or durham constabulary do games at the sty ? Cleveland police were there as well I think as Northumbria's horses are out of action for a long time so the cleveland horses are being used up here (they were used after Sunderland v Boro and Sunderland Arsenal anyway). Guest Lee-T Posted October 26, 2008 Share Posted October 26, 2008 I had a pretty bad injury on my leg 13 month ago , and have had 3 operations since , as I was walking to the metro station on the way back , I decided to go to the side out of the way as people got restless and began pushing the police back. I horse which weighed about 50 stone came down the bank ( being pushed by our own fans ) and absolutley threw me back and i bashed me leg ( same leg as operation ) against the bollard , only to be whacked by one of the police with a batton , I tried explaining I needed to get out of the way so I could make sure me leg was not as bad as I originally thought , only to be linked either arm by two riot police and threw against a wall and told to sit the f*** down and stop working meself. I thought the police and stewards , inside and outside the ground were a total shambles today and the chant " You dont know what your doing " summed there work today up. Newcastle people have generally bitten their lips and remained civilised and dignified when these mackem "celebs" are seen around town. It goes without saying that no Newcastle player could ever safely set foot in Sunderland (a ludicrous comparison I know) but I think that as long as they treat Newcastle supporters in the way they do and their mangement and directors turn a blind eye to the problem, then perhaps we should let them know they are no longer welcome in pubs,clubs and restaurants north of the Tyne. Northumbria Police say the trouble began when more than 1000 Magpie supporters travelled by train and Metro to Wearside, instead of using free coaches laid on by the club. One officer from British Transport Police broke his wrist as he tried to separate rival fans near St Peter’s Metro Station before the match. Several fans threw fireworks — including one at a mounted officer which left the horse with minor burns — and over the course of the day there were a number of incidents of coins and other missiles thrown at police officers and among rival fans. Lynsey Richardson, 27, of Hebburn, South Tyneside, watched in horror as Newcastle fans pushed an elderly man as he tried to get on the Metro at Pelaw, Gateshead. She said: “The train was full of Newcastle fans when it arrived and Sunderland fans who tried to get on were pushed back. One man appeared to be in his 60s but they just pushed him too.” Despite the chaotic scenes before and after the match, Chief Superintendent Neil Mackay, head of the force’s Operations Unit said: “The vast majority of fans behaved well . . . 29 arrests out of a capacity crowd is still low.” Some Sunderland fans blamed football bad boy Joey Barton for fanning the flames of tension after he was seen taunting home fans. The 26-year-old was warming up on the touchline when he became embroiled in a row with fans, stewards and police. After refusing stewards’ requests to move away he was pelted with coins and water bottles before police officers intervened. The former jailbird then sparked fury by kissing the Newcastle United badge on his training top. One Sunderland fan ran onto the pitch to confront Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given after Kieron Richardson scored the winner for the Black Cats and rival fans surged onto the pitch and exchanged punches. Sunderland fan Tony Hughes, 44, said: “Barton has got a lot to answer for. He intentionally riled the fans by not moving away from in front of the crowd and then kissing his badge. “He says he has turned over a new leaf but he will never change.” Martyn McFadden, editor of the Black Cats fanzine A Love Supreme, said: “Barton should have been rehabilitated before coming back into the first team for Newcastle. “He is a good footballer but has a bad attitude.” However, Newcastle fanzine The Mag writer Billy Furious said: “Joey’s our boy. As I said earlier any trouble on the Metro was purely down to Northumbria police who put us all on a Metro and then didn't police it or any of the Mackem stations we passed through! Let's be straight. The manager of Sunderland is as much a thug as Barton has ever been, intentionally ruining a fellow professional's carreer and betraying his country to boot. On top of that he regarded yesterday's violence as just "high spirited fans enjoying themselves". If crowds are allowed to be judge and jury and dictate what players and officials can and can not do will Keane be asked to stay out of sight and away from the touch line at SJP in case he infuriates the home fans ?
