Another tear-stained article by Ms Taylor, this time on her Blog...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2008/dec/05/sunderland-roy-keane

First response/comment (at the foot of the article) is quite a good one - calling Ms Taylor up on her comments today, compared to some she made a few weeks ago when she compared Keane to Cloughie!!  ;D

However, she also still manages to get a dig in at Keegan.

I liked:

"Sadly, I'm still chuckling to myself as Louise tries desperately to extricate herself from the sticky Keane love-in that she's built-up over the last year.

Maybe when you move on and the next muppet takes over at your beloved SAFC Louise, you could ask your Sports Ed to look back over the hilarious, sycophantic drivel you've written about Royston and help you to be a journalist again.

The Guardian's turned into a bad Mills + Boon paperback recently over Roy and his salt & pepper beard."

Since when have hacks like Louise Taylor had to be consistent about anything though? They change their views based on popular opinion and unfolding events all the time.

How fucking annoying is her face?

Just got an email from BlueSquare

Subj: Man Utd to add to Mackem woes?

A rudderless Sunderland face a daunting trip to face the Champions at Old Trafford this Saturday (KO 5.30pm, live on Setanta). Without a manager and not having beaten United away since 1968, we give the Mackems no chance! We're offering a huge 22/1 on a win for Niall Quinn's struggling club.

Those are poor odds really, Man Utd will destroy them.

Reidy & F.Shepherd big up Sunderland & BFSA

Sam Allardyce favourite to replace Roy Keane at Sunderland

The former Sunderland manager Peter Reid has promised Sam Allardyce he would be landing one of the best jobs in football should he take over the reins at the Stadium of Light although he could face competition from Alan Curbishley.

Allardyce remains the bookies' favourite to succeed Roy Keane despite a sudden surge in betting on Avram Grant. The former Chelsea manager has emerged as a surprise contender for the job with former West Ham coach Curbishley understood to be surprisingly willing to consider a move to Wearside.

It is believed Sunderland want an experienced British manager to take the helm which bodes well for Curbishley and Allardyce who said "of course I'd be interested" in filling a vacancy created by Keane's resignation.

"It's got to be one of the best jobs available for a long time," Reid said.

"There's money at the club – a lot more than when I was there – and real ambition. Plus, Niall Quinn is a chairman any football man would be delighted to work with. If he's not the best chairman in the Premier League, then he's not too far of being it."

Quinn, who vehemently denied Keane resigned by text message, will step up his search for the Irishman's successor following today's game at Manchester United. He has already been inundated with hundreds of enquiries from would-be managers across the world following Keane's sudden exit.

Quinn said: "People should not forget how far this club has come under Roy Keane's leadership and the journey continues.

"To that end, we are very encouraged that we have already been contacted by enough people from around the globe to know that Sunderland is a major attraction.

"We have an open mind about the next manager, we will be professional in the selection process and will take as long as is necessary to get the right man for the job.

"There's a great team off the field as well as on it and between Peter Walker, the incoming chief executive Steve Walton, the other executive board members and myself, we are putting together a list and we'll take it from there."

Meanwhile, former Newcastle chairman, Freddy Shepherd said that "Newcastle's loss could be Sunderland's gain" should Allardyce become the first manager to serve both clubs.

Shepherd brought Allardyce to St James' Park as manager during his days in charge of the Tyneside club and is convinced he will prove Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was wrong to sack after just eight months in the role.

Shepherd told The Daily Telegraph: "What Sunderland need at this moment in time is discipline and Sam would be the perfect manager to get things sorted out.

"He's an excellent man-manager but he's nobody's fool and there's no way that he will put up with any shenanigans. He's the gaffer and that's the end of it.

"So all in all I wouldn't have the slightest hesitation in recommending him to Quinn and the board of directors at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland fans should certainly be prepared to forgive him for working at St James' Park.

"I'm certain Sam's up to the challenge and I bet he's raring to go because he's got a point to prove after what happened to him at Newcastle."

Out-of-work Allardyce was installed as the bookmakers’ immediate favourite for the job after Keane let his intentions be known to chairman Niall Quinn by text message on Thursday.

Allardyce left St James’ Park in January, “by mutual consent”, after a brief and difficult time at the club, though his achievements with Bolton still carry weight after he established them in the top half of the Premier League after bringing them up from the Championship.

“Sunderland are a great club so of course I’d be interested in talking to them,” said Allardyce.

“I have huge respect for the chairman Niall Quinn and the job he has done.”

“I enjoyed the year I had at Sunderland and also when I did some coaching work there under Peter Reid. I also know how passionate the fans are about their team.”

Despite his links with Newcastle, the fact that his time there was so brief, and unsuccessful, means his appointment would not be as problematic as if he had deeper ties to Sunderland’s rivals.

Allardyce also spent time at Sunderland as a player, making 25 appearances for them as an uncompromising centre-back in the early 80s.

Allardyce’s candidacy has also been backed by Kevin Nolan, who was his captain at Bolton.

“I would definitely give the job to Sam if I was Sunderland chairman – no doubt about it,” he said.

Keane is understood to have announced his departure by sending club chairman Niall Quinn a text message. Quinn made several attempts to contact Keane to try to change his mind, but his calls and texts went unanswered.

However, Quinn’s fears were confirmed when Keane’s London-based solicitor, Michael Kennedy, faxed a statement signed by his client to the club on Thursday at lunchtime.

Keane later put out a brief statement which read: “I would like to thank my staff, players, Niall Quinn and, in particular, the fans for their support during my time at Sunderland, and I would like to wish the club every success in the future.”
