Sébastien Bassong (now retired)

Bassong and S. Taylor were both outstanding today for slightly different reasons, Enrique was excellent defensively and Colo did OK.

Bassong is worth £squillions.

i expect Bassong to be sold in the summer for £5m  and after that Lambias to say that we made a huge profit on this deal and that the money will be spend wisely but of course they will end up in Ashley's pocket, like it happened in January.

Dear me..

Oh and drop Coloccini for Taylor Gallowgate?  Why because Taylor's distribution is so great? :nope:  Coloccini and Bassong are our two best central defenders, Coloccini has been out of form recently but he's still been solid, which is more then I can say for Taylor at centre back (he's been quite good at right back though IMO).

Taylor would be a solid RB on one condition:  he stopped playing up front.  I brought my mate (Spurs fan) to the game today, and his comment was "Your right back doesn't seem to understand the 'back' part of his job description."

I'm all for the RB making runs up front, but unlike Beye, he's too reluctant to go back.   Too busy trying to be that Geordie hero.  He needs to mature and realise it's a team game and he is not Kaka 2.0.

didn't see the whole game yesterday but most of the 2nd half...had to come on say how good bassong was again, if he keeps this up he'll be as good as woodgate was for us imo (taking into account fitness)

great player

From what I've seen of him, I'd say he's been at least as good as Woodgate was for us, especially taking fitness into account.

i was half cut yesterday but there was a long punted ball up and he out muscled jo (i think) and was surrounded by a couple of players and he elected to take it on his chest and try and play it away

reminded me of woodgate completely...fair enough the ball was nicked away from him but that he has the presence of mind and confidence to even try it says it all for me

be devastated if he leaves

Remember the situation, thought the exact same thing.

Also another time towards the end, after Butt had made a good tackle in our box, the ball ended up with Bassong, facing our goal, with Saha putting pressure on him, and Bassong just completely outmuscled him to be able to turn and clear the danger. Lovely mixture of confidence, skill, power and awareness shown there.

I think he is a player Wenger will be looking for in the summer. Gallas is past it, Toure has been poor all season according to my Arsenal mate.

He is young, he is french, and he is good. Calm on the ball, though he lacks a bit of quality in his distribution at times.

Decent reading of the game, good in the air. Not to fast, but not slow either. And looks like a good leader.

He's been better than Woodagte this season, easily. He hasn't put a fucking foot wrong man wth the exception of the Blackburn game. Not saying he IS better than Woodgate, because 20 games at CB obviously isn't enough to judge.

We absolutely cannot and must not sell him.

Only plus point is that the media are largely ignoring us so we might keep him a secret.  Articles still talk about Nick Butt being our best player, probably because he's one of the only names on the teamsheet they recognise and they haven't watched him play for the last 3 years.

Seb's A Star Says Stopper Steve

By Craig Hope

MAGPIE stopper Steve Harper singled out defensive linchpin Sebastien Bassong for special praise after another flawless display at the heart of the United rearguard during Sunday's goalless draw with Everton.

Toon set to reward Bassong with bumper deal

Feb 23 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

NEWCASTLE UNITED will sit down with star defender Sebastien Bassong in the summer to talk about an improved contract.

The French defender is currently a leading contender to pick up the player of the season award at St James’s Park this term and has been one of the few plus points for Toon fans this season.

Bassong is currently tied down to Newcastle until 2011 but is only picking up a fraction of what some of his team-mates earn after joining from Metz as a squad player.

And while United will be keen to keep his feet on the ground, part of their transfer blueprint is to protect the status of their top performers.

The Paris-born ace has made rapid progress in the Newcastle first team and once again put in a sparkling display at the heart of the back four to earn a clean sheet against in-form Everton yesterday.

The Chronicle understands that Bassong’s superb form this season has unsurprisingly caught the attention of a host of top clubs in Europe, meaning Newcastle may have revise his salary or risk losing their £1.5m bargain buy if the big guns come knocking.

United’s managing director Derek Llambias went public on February 10 when he claimed Newcastle were “not a selling club” in light of criticism following the departures of James Milner, Charles N’Zogbia and Shay Given.

Llambias also made it clear that 22-year-old Bassong would be going nowhere, with Newcastle hoping to build a team around stars like the former Metz defender and Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez.

Meanwhile weekend reports that Lancashire businessman Geoff Sheard is set to launch a Toon takeover bid have been dismissed by a United source.

Sheard failed in a bid to take over Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday last year and has allegedly claimed to have financial backers who can buy out Toon tycoon Mike Ashley.

However, a Newcastle insider said today: “We always get this type of story from time to time.

“There’s no truth in it.”

In a recent interview with the Chronicle, Llambias revealed that although there were several interested parties in buying Ashley out during the period in which the club was up for sale, none of them relayed a realistic bid to finance expert Keith Harris, who was looking after the sale of the club.

S.Taylor over Colo in center defense? I'll have some of the stuff you're taking, Taylor is error prone one mistake and they're in, as people have said although Colo not been at his best we still keeping it solid in the back how many clear cut chances did they have yesterday? Keep Taylor RB hes doing quite well and is useful for set pieces defending and attacking

Does the basics well, the rest is all coachable

I'd go as far as to say he's the best centre half of his age in the league, unless i have missed someone obvious. Personally, i think Coloccini has had a decent first season but Bassong has eclipsed him.

I worry that Bassong will have second season syndrome next year, which young players sometimes do.
