Stand-in Newcastle boss Kinnear is believed to have made a pitch to succeed Roy Keane at the Stadium Of Light. And news of the astonishing move will spark uproar at St James' Park when Newcastle take on Tottenham this afternoon. People Sport understands that Kinnear's representatives approached Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn about the vacancy. Kinnear is believed to be considering his options because there is no guarantee from Newcastle that he will still be in a job once billionaire owner Mike Ashley finds a buyer. Kinnear has been put in charge of the Toon until the end of the season but he could be out of work much sooner if Ashley manages to sell, although a deal looks increasingly unlikely in the current economic climate. Initially, Kinnear was happy with his Newcastle deal but I understand he is now more bullish about his managerial capabilities in the Premier League and wants more security. Kinnear believes he has done well to steady the ship at St James' Park since taking over from Kevin Keegan, who left the Toon in early September. The Geordies have picked up under Kinnear despite problems on and off the pitch and the former Wimbledon boss has revelled in the limelight after years out of the game. That is why he is believed to be interested i n Sunderland - but the move will not go down well at either club. Black Cats fans do not want anyone with Toon connections in charge while Newcastle fans will be incensed by what they will consider as treachery. Despite his interest in the post, Kinnear is likely to be an outsider for the job with Quinn revealing that more than 30 people had asked to be considered. Bookies have reported heavy betting on Croatia coach Slaven Bilic and he remains the favourite at 9-4 with Ladbrokes. Peter Reid is also in the club's thoughts although popular caretaker boss Ricky Sbragia - a target for new Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce - has impressed. Sbragia is second favourite at 3-1, followed by Alan Curbishley at 8-1, and Avram Grant at 10-1. However, if it isn't true, he (Kinnear) needs to come out and deny it - allegedly touting himself to the local rivals of the club he's currently working at??? Martins is injured so it can't be a story about him leaving, they've done the Owen thing too much over the past week and Ashley has already said he wants to sell. "hmmmm, hang on, Sunderland don't have a manager! Why don't we say something about Kinnear applying for it. That'll get the Geordies angry with Kinnear so they'll boo him in the game against Spurs and they'll lose badly." They're fucking idiots, especially on a Sunday.
