I've never understood Spurs being one of the sly 6? They're hardly a paragon of success or a financial juggernaut, they've finished top 4 once in the last 5 years and until last night hadn't won anything in 16 years.

 

We've already gone past them now, probably Man Utd and Chelsea too and on par with Arsenal with just Liverpool and Man City ahead of us, I'd say Villa are right on our tails too. The Sly 6 is done, no matter how much verbal falatio Sky put into them, its over for the traditional "big" clubs.

It's always been a big 5 + Spurs really . I think they were shoehorned in due to the new stadium and getting a couple of top 4 finishes . In reality before Ashley came along and ran us into the ground they were no bigger than us.

They clearly are financially, there is still a financial gulf between the 6, including Spurs and everyone else. They're not on the pitch at the moment but that could quickly change with a better manager and a few good signings.

Congrats @leffe186 How does this season feel now by the way? Is football really trophies over everything, or is just a good league year where you win most of the time ultimately more satisfying for the most part?

I think the Big 6 nonsense is from these clubs sitting down and creating a voting bloc some years back. It's less 'Big' based on achievements and more about their control over the league. Case in point, even when they're shite they still get all of the loopholes.

 

Man City turning face after the court cases has been lovely, of course.

The amount of years as fans where we've said, "I'll take 17th in the league if we could finally win a Cup", and Spurs have done exactly that.

Think getting to the CL final was crucial for them being seen that way. Without that it'd be ridiculously tenuous.

True, them being part of a top 6 in recent years is fair. But I think it's the very idea there's a 'big 6' (especially when it came to the super league). Just starts to seem a bit too broad and silly, they're not on the level of the others.

 

Getting to the CL final did quite rightly boost their stock though.

Since we've won a trophy and been in the CK we're taking for granted how much of an achievement it is to do what Spurs have done tbh 

 

They've been shit this season in the league but they still had to finish in Europe last year and then win the Europa.

How old are you (genuine question)?You’ve never understood it? Or you stopped understanding it recently?

 

If you never understood it then you’re just being a bit silly. We could go back to the 80s but let‘s just look at the last 20 years or so. Once Abramovich came in it was Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool, then a lot of other teams without silly money and struggling to break into the CL. Levy decided to strip things back, get a ton of kids in and build for the long term. Eventually we got good enough to be consistently top 5 or 6 - after 4th in 2009/10 we finished at least 6th (and usually higher) until 2021 when we were 7th.

 

We’ve gone through this a million times. We were one of the top six clubs in the league and income for over a decade. It’s really not difficult to understand. Are we one of the top 6 clubs or the “sly 6” or whatever you’re annoyed about? You’d have to define your terms, but I’d guess not, we just finished 17th. To say we’re not a financial juggernaut is a bit peculiar though.

I'd be interested to know from @leffe186 if last night is a true test of that age-old thought experiment. I'd argue that '17th in the league' doesn't really tell the whole story here, because 17th is historically bad for Spurs. Their domestic campaign has been absolutely disgraceful given their finance, infrastructure and standing. 

 

If you're Wigan Athletic, you biting hands off if you're offered a cup win and a 17th placed finish.

They've been given a massive second chance to "go again" and put this league one down as a blip in their recent history. A good managerial appointment and a few top signings which they're capable of, they should get back in the top 7/8 at least.
