West Ham agree fee in region of £15m with Liverpool for Andy Carroll

Will get shot with shit for this but we could do with a "football related" director now tbh, someone at that level who knows what football is.

Obviously someone FAR more experienced than Wise though obviously.

"At the time Carroll would have been sold, but instead I got him to sign a new contract,"

When was this? I can't find anything about Carroll's contract situation before the one he signed this season.

I was trying to find out about that as well

I didn't think it was that long since he'd signed a contract prior to this extension mind.

Can't believe a word any of them say.  If a player comes good, they are all queueing up to claim credit and if they flop, they blame others.

Just happy Carroll is here and I don't think he will be going anywhere for the time being.  Ashley needs to be seen to be backing Pardew and as Pardew has been very vocal about receiving assurances that Carroll will not be sold then Ashley cannot start undermining his manager within a month of appointing him otherwise Pardew instantly loses all credability (if he has any) with the supporters and players.

Signed a deal on 12/03/2009. Wise left 01/04/2009, so maybe Wise did have some say.

My honest guess is that Wise is looking to get back into management and is trying to claim some credit for seeing Carroll's potential and rewarding it.

Reminds of when Howard Wilkinson, George Graham & David O'Leary all claimed they were the men responsible for Leeds having a load of good youngsters.

I'm not willing to link to such shite but needless to say the Sunday Express has Spurs 'lining up a stunning £20million New Year swoop' for Carroll. They 'could offer Robbie Keane or Peter Crouch in part-exchange' as well.

It's in the Sunday Mirror as well*, almost word for word. Different media group isn't it? Perhaps leatherface has been blabbing.

Mirror also reckons Chelsea want him. This shit isn't ever going to end is it.

*edit - too late

Don't think you can underestimate the effect growing up watching Shearer, staying loyal and becoming a legend, will have had on him. Worth more than a couple medals at Chelsea and Man Utd where, in the grand scheme of things, you'll soon become forgotten about.

Aye, and probably be on the bench half the time.

We're a fucking basketcase of a football club but strangely enough he's probably at the best place for his football development.  I rate him really highly, but if he went to Chelsea or wherever next summer there's every chance he'd fall by the wayside imo.

Tbh though, the only thing Ashley could do to make me hate him more than I already do is sell Carroll (especially for under the odds) so you've got to expect it a bit I suppose.

What would you consider an offer too good to refuse? Serious offers like, not horses heads in beds, or owt.

I'd use the Berbatov deal as a precedent. Berbatov was arguably more talented at the time but had also just about peaked whereas Carroll's barely into his twenties which should add value and the fact he's pretty much irreplaceable to us adding more.

So basically a canny bit more than £30m, which I don't think anyone will be prepared to pay at the minute.
