Do you think when Pardew drew up his list of players, Carroll was on it?

Not his first choice certainly, that was de Jong. But the way we approached Carroll after that failed probably suggests that he was the second name there, especially after Liverpool hinted that he could be available.

Don't want him, don't need him. He'll be regressive to our playing style. And anything above 7-8M quid for Andy Carroll is a ripoff. If he's willing to sit on the bench while we continue to play our 4-3-3, then sure. He can be an impact sub, as he has been at Anfied.

I would like him back. He offers something else...that header at the euros...not many can do that. Doesn't need time to settle. Loves the club and properly didnt wanted to leave in the first place. He will be good to partner both ba & cisse + we need min. 3 top strikers to compete.

He is proven and only concern is the long Ball tactics imo

Funnily enough, buying Carroll right now actually fits perfectly into our transfer policy.

This is a player who's valuation is probably at its lowest ebb.

Never mind improving, even if he can only get back to being as good as he was when he was playing for us, he'll never be sold for anything less than 10m for the rest of his career.

And what better place to get things back on track than his hometown club?

In this respect, signing Carroll now really isn't that different from signing someone like Ben Arfa or Santon when we did.

Although he doesn't necessarily fit into the current team, between European games and Cup games, he'll get plenty of time on the pitch this season. And who knows what happens moving forward. In a year or two, we may have sold off Cisse or Ba for another ridiculous fee. Alternatively, we might just sell Carroll for 35m again.

Assuming that he's willing to take a wage cut and accept that he'll have to fight his way into the starting XI, I don't see why not.

Great post. Only risk in Carroll is his personality that might result in conflicts. This is a country where Peter fucking Crouch has been bought for big money several times. If AC flops here or causes trouble, there's always Stoke/West Ham/whoever else playing "physical football" that we can offload him to for £10m+. He's young and we need bodies up front.

Always thought Pardew's comments in the past about Carroll were diplomatic and designed to leave the door open.

Rodgers has dropped a bollock by trying to peddle his player in public and we've sensed an opportunity to land a good, proven young English striker on the cheap. Whetherthe clubs can agree terms is nowt to do with Pardew. But I do reckon Pardew wants him and this isn't just a board decision.

Carrolls rate of improvement from our late champ season to prem was ridiculous.

From the 5-1 against Cardiff till he moved to pool, he'd scored 24 goals & 6 assists out of 33 games he played atleast one full half in.

Thats why he went for 35 Million.

If any side can get him back on that progression, he'll turn into a very big player.

I think the vast majority of transfers in top-flight football are in the pipeline for a considerable period of time. I would very much doubt the club is moving off the back of Rodgers presser a few days ago.

We were interested in January before we signed Cisse.

the headline in the mail. "Splash the cash and bring £35m Andy back! Pardew begs Ashley to seal Carroll's return"

In what possible way do those quotes suggest pardew is begging :)

Yeah but that team was built around him, this team wont be massive difference. He will never perform to those levels again for that reason.

Like Pards has no say in this, they were and I reckon still are very close, can see Pardew being gutted if MA cannot pull this off.

With other players we want to sign Pards has to be involved as much as is it a player he wants but then if any deal is done the player will want to meet him and

find out how he see's him fitting in blah blah blah but with Carroll there is no need for any of that.

How exactly was the team built around him? Did we bring in people specifically to play to his strengths? Did we suddenly adopt a completely different philosophy? Apart from maybe having an effective set piece routine with Barton aiming for Carroll's head (which makes sense and something we've definitely been lacking since he left), this seems like another often bandied around myth to me..?

Even that game at St. James where he dived in the box, he had a very good first half

 No.

Carroll is back to the player he was before his "wonder year". There's very little to suggest otherwise.

Before his wonder year as you call it, he was what, 19 and getting the odd game in the cups, like Vuckic and Abeid last season? Do you seriously want to compare the striker that got on and nearly changed the FA Cup final for his team and who subsequently went to the Euros and did well enough in his time on the pitch to that stage of his development? Really? :crazy2:

Cherry pick the odd game if you want but he's looked completely average since he left us. There's nothing to suggest he can just pick up where he left off.

Is it a requirement that players we're after must have recently set the world alight? As oldtype pointed out, it seems to be a specific tactic employed by NUFC at the moment to take on players who've proven they can do it at this level before but have gone slightly astray in recent times, like Ben Ara for example. The fact he's done it before makes it more likely that he migth do it again, rather than a completely unproven youngster from a smaller league, wouldn't you agree?

All the attacks we based around him, every time we got the ball we looked for Carroll, every time we got into attacking thirds we looked for Carroll.

The whole the way of playing was built around Carroll, maybe not in the Championship but in the Premier League it certainly was.

If we signed him this time, he would be an alternative to our current team and he wont give the performances he gave before because the team wont be built around him.

Not concerned with Pards comments, he doesn't want journalists bugging him everyday which detracts from the tour and the team. Obviously he would be less involved as he hardly needs to sell the club or introduce himself to Carroll. It is a simple deal on that end, just thrashing out details which is a boardroom level process.

Right thing to distance himself imo.

We're doing fine as we are in the transfer market and on the pitch so why risk all that to bring in someone who hasn't played well in 18 months just because he's available? I'd still say Carroll is unproven btw. 6 good months in the Premiership doesn't mean anything if he's average, at best, for the 18 months after it.

Dead true. Dekka also took the unusual step of publically crticising our fans who had a go at AC at Anfield just after the transfer.

I've already said I would like him back but I don't think it will happen.

On Rodgers, I think he's made a mistake and should keep Carroll to have an option. He may have started believing the ridiculous "Barcelona" hype that seems to be surrounding him and his teams. I thought Swansea were generally awful last season, probably the most negative side we saw at SJP.

Any team can keep possession if thats all they want to do and don't show any ambition to hurt the opposition. I'd rather watch a side getting the ball up to Carroll quickly.

Rodgers is surrounded by a big hype which he may struggle to live up to, especially at his present club.
