U23s & Academy

went and watched the academy derby earlier,  very enjoyable game,  first half was a pretty tight affair, Sunderland probably edged the early part before NUFC got more into in and had a penalty shout midway through the half when Campbell burst through.  Sunderland should probably have took the lead soon after when they had a shot cleared off the line.

We took the lead when a clearance upfield dropped to Campbell, who picked the ball up in between the SAFC midfield and defence before slipping a lovely ball through for the on running McCorrigan who neatly chipped the ball past the onrushing keeper.

Sunderland started the 2nd half strongly and hit the post, although credit to Baird in the goal for making a cracking save before the Adam Campbell took over as he blew away Sunderland, who had struggled to live with his pace all game, took over the game.

Firstly he burst down the right hand side and crossed for Hoganson to score to score at the back post,  almost from the kick off he picked the ball up again before slipping the ball through for JJ Hooper to score and then scored a fantastic goal.  A Sunderland corner or free kick was cleared and Campbell picked the ball up about 15 yards from his 18 yard box, turned and then just sprinted the length of the pitch, swept past 3 or 4 defenders while the rest were left in his wake before rifling a rasping shot from about 16 yards into the net leaving the keeper no chance.

3 goals in about 5 minutes and it was game over.  Thought Streete and Storey were solid at the back while slightly disappointed with the fullback, especially as both Nicholson and Riley have featured for the reserves and are better than they were today.  Dennis Knight looked a decent player in the middle of the park, cracking left foot and spread the ball well.  First time i've seen Hooper, big strong lad but didn't really play that well, was steady but nothing special although took his goal well.

its the academy derby against the mackems 2moro morning,  11am kick off at little benton.

Our U18's have had a terrible start to the season compared to what we are like normally, think we've only won 2 out of the first 5 or 6 games, which by our standards at U18 level is very poor. Apparently the majority of lads we are playing are just first years straight from school and our second year apprentices now play for the reserve team to get more experience.

Mackems LOVE an excuse, I honestly think they would take an excuse over a win

Thanks mate - great write up.  The ginger magician sounds like a real prospect.

Quite like the fact we have the option of using potential first team players in with the reserves again. Feels like we used to use the reserves as a glorified academy team so the decent youngsters never got the chance to competitively mix with the lads who were in and around the first team picture.

Seems to be a very good blend of youth, experience and 'game-time needed' in that squad.

58mins: NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2): Newcastle have doubled their lead through Sylvain Marveaux. Lovenkrands found the Frenchman scampering down the left-hand side and he cut into the box and, with the outside of his left boot, clipped a perfectly-placed shot into the far bottom corner. He has been excellent tonight and deserves his goal.
