mrmojorisin75
gillespie comparison is mainly in the way they play in front of the full back, whether they go in or out it's immaterial if you're always in front Describing Gillespie as a winger who plays in front of the full back is probably the worst description of a player i think ive ever heard. What were you doing while I was watching the games then? It's the perfect description of Gillespie.

Gillespie never had the ball out of his feet until he kicked it past the full back and ran. That was his game, that's why Fergie sold him to us, he was a one trick pony. Same as Townsend, which is where we started.
AyeDubbleYoo
Bit harsh on Townsend, he can go left or right, cross or shoot with both feet.
mrmojorisin75
And by the way, calling a player brainless is ignored, suggesting he's limited in scope is the worst thing in the world. Welcome to No everyone.

Anyway i think Townsed is an okay player but is considered better than he is due to the low opinion of many english players at the moment.

Welcome to No everyone. Think it was ignored because it was a stupid comment. He's a young player with a lot to learn but he isn't brainless. He's not James McClean

Anyway i think Townsed is an okay player but is considered better than he is due to the low opinion of many english players at the moment. what i've said in the comparison is that they both play with the ball at their feet then look to kick and run past the fullback, gillespie more outside and townsend uses his trickery to come inside and shoot etc. again reacting to the earlier comment about us equating skill to individualism all of this is why a lot of people couldn't see that anita was a great player until recently, a number of us recognised it but the majority didn't, it's the english way

alexf
I don't want to appear like I'm a huge fan of Townsend or anything Lets clear that misunderstanding up because he has a lot to learn and if he doesn't he'll probably fade away and never amount to much. I was simply defending him a little but because I think he has impressed in the few games he's played for England so far. Think it showed against Chile when he didn't play what he brings to the team. A team like England need someone with pace and who is direct and can cause problems by running at defences because the rest of the team are incredibly static in their movement. When the alternatives are people like Milner then I'll take Townsend ahead of him all day.

AyeDubbleYoo
I know that, but you also need dangerous players who can actually influence a game.

Mole_Toonfan
I'd say a lack of intelligence is a bigger issue than a lack of technique.

Guest alijmitchell
I'm not sure the difference in technical ability with the ball at feet is really our main problem. The main problem seems to be as always, keeping possession of the ball and developing phases of play that eventually threaten - i.e. our off the ball movement. We have some players that can do technically good things with ball at feet (Wilshere, Rooney, Gerrard) whose touch and passing ability is very good. However, overall, the difference between us and Germany was the dynamism of their movement off the ball - the speed at which supporting players found space, the way in which players switched areas of the pitch, and the surging of players forwards when a player has the ball. Their players never really spent that much time with the ball stuck in their feet, because they always provide each other a new option for a pass. We did not. Possession requires great passing, but mostly great movement.
Jayson
Think people are being a bit harsh on us yesterday. First half certainly Germany were giving the ball away 5x more than we were, our passing was quick and concise in the main first half they just defended very efficiently. Townsend, sturridge & Lallana all did their usual trickery around the box that has worked previously only to get corners. 2nd Half they took it to us more instead, still Sturridge should have been 1 on 1 twice. I think we're playing quite nicely now as a side in the main & i like the chances being given to those performing in the prem.
Guest Howaythetoon
Fucking hell, Townsend is a young player who has just came onto the scene... people criticising him for what, not being world-class, the finished article?! That is another thing that's wrong about England and our game, morons on the stands who expect everyone to be the best or to be able to compete against the best. The lad is talented and has some good attributes, lets not fucking write him off just yet eh, same applies to other promising youngsters. At least Townsend wants to get on the ball and get at the opposition. He's quick, powerful and has a good shot on him. Limited and one dimensional maybe but he's a threat.
