Joey Barton (now retired)

Recommended Posts

He won't be away until he's run down his contract, unless a CL club comes in and offers him more money than he's on at the moment.

All this Twitter bollocks, demonstrating that he's still a magnet for negative headlines, will make it even less likely than it was already that a "bigger club" will come in for him. It also shafts any chance there might have been for him to come to a new agreement with us. Result: until next summer he'll continue trousering more money every week than most of us will earn in a year.

We can only hope that he'll stop being disruptive in the period until he moves on a Bosman to Stoke or wherever.

He's mentioned Nolan (gone) , Enrique and Jonas as being the next to be sold off. If that's not disruptive I don't know what is. If that's captaincy material then maybe we need to re-define the meaning of captaincy.

Didn't some spanner say he said that at one of his talk ins?  Only for it to be rubbished by two or three that also went to the talk.

Are you the spanner?

Joey Barton has backed Newcastle to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window and dreams of playing in the UEFA Champions League one day.

Magpies fans still smarting from the £35million sale of striker Andy Carroll in January were stung further this week when captain Kevin Nolan elected to drop down into the Championship with West Ham.

Barton only has one year remaining on his current deal and has admitted he expects to leave St James' Park after the coming season with contract talks with the Magpies hierarchy having broken down.

But the combative midfielder is happy with the players being linked with the Tyneside outfit, who have already snapped up Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Yohan Cabaye.

Barton told Sky Sports News: "I've heard a few rumours about players getting signed and they seem to be good quality players, so if they can add to what we've already got at the football club, then so be it.

"I'm employed to play football, not to make decisions about the transfer market. Let's just hope for everyone's sake they can find a few more Cheik Tiotes."

Stupidity

Barton has endured a troubled career on and off the field, which included a stint behind bars, but believes he is now playing some of his best football and has ambitions to test himself against the very best.

"I want to play at the highest level," he admitted.

"I've not been fortunate enough to play in the Champions League yet, I've played in the Uefa Cup a couple of times, but I want to test myself now.

"After bouncing back and having a decent season I want to push on and make up for lost time in my career through injury or stupidity.

"I'm hungry to succeed and that can't happen soon enough and it would be great if it's at Newcastle.

I just don't see a role for him whatsoever in the setup now.

Jonas, Marveaux, Cabaye, Tiote & Ben Arfa will all be ahead of him in the pecking order you'd imagine, so unless he's prepared to sit on his arse earning £60k a week on our bench for his last season, I can see him moving on anyway.

I could quite easily see a midfield 3 of him, Tiote and Cabaye, particularly in tough away games.

I think we'll be signing another midfielder tbh.

With our current squad Barton walks int to starting 11 with ease tbh

You reckon? I see a front 6 of Marveaux, Jonas, Cabaye, Tiote, Ben Arfa & Ba.

I hope he stays, because how often are we going to be able to field a first-choice team? It happens so rarely these days that you can play your "best" XI for every game.

Like Nut says though, it does appear we are looking to bring in another midfielder - as well as another striker - which would mean that I think he'd find himself outside of the team if all/nearly all of those players were fit to play.

You'd imagine Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa are automatic starters at present. Marveaux won't have joined to sit on the bench and neither will Ba. That only leaves one more place in the team, which could be a central midfield spot, an attacking midfield/wide slot or a striker slot, depending on what formation we play.

You'd still imagine he would play 20+ games, given our luck with injuries, and would provide a great option from the bench (if he remained motivated enough to do so), but I can see Ashley/Llambias desperate to shift him if that's the case as they won't want somebody on that money as a fringe player when there's the likes of Ferguson, Gosling and Vuckic in and amongst it too. That's not even mentioning his potentially disruptive influence, etc.

Not saying it's necessarily "right", just how I think it will be.

but one of those 6 is bound to be banned or injured at any one time

Agree with that.

Would agree too, based on the squad as it stands in the here and now. I'd have him in there with Cabaye/Tiote, while having Ben Arfa/Marveaux outside of Ba.

However, as Nut's argument/my argument goes, we don't appear to have finished bringing in attacking players.
