Guest John Carvery
I love the bloke, he's a personality.
steve_69
Yeah, I have to admit i'm a fan as well. He's not afraid to speak his mind and rock the boat a bit, which is a rarety among footballers, ex-pros, managers, commentators etc. He's also not just another conveyor belt, boring as fuck 'game of two halves' mong either. I appreciate he's not everyone's cup of tea and the reasons why are pretty understandable but personally I think his attitude within the game is pretty refreshing. summerof69
He thinks he's way more popular here than he is, always playing up to the NUFC fans. Can't blame him for thinking that, got arguably the best reception of everyone at Harper's testimonial

Guest
From what I remember, he came out after that season saying he wanted to stay but had no contract offer, we offered a 3 year deal, then buggered off to QPR when their mental spending and long contracts came in to play! SEMTEX
I'm fine with it. I'm sure he got shit from sunderland fans, and he just nicely reminded them of his involvement in NUFC/SAFC folklore. Think people read far too much into this shit just because it's Joey Barton. I'm not sure it was any great attempt to garner attention, he's just doing what he wants to do, without punching people for a change.
loki679
Would have been fun watching the inbreds trying to work out how to signal '9-1' on their eight fingers.

Lush Vlad
I'm sure they withdrew the offer. Didn't he go public with his criticism or say something dodgy at a talk in? Him and Nolan knew they were going at the end of the season when we came back up. I remember the extra long lap of honour they did, where it seemed as if they both knew that was a goodbye. Turned out Barton played 2 more games the next season, then went.

I think he decided to put a hold on it after the carroll sale which didn't go down well with the club and that combined with his sudden appearance on twitter and everything that entailed (and his agent is will mckay which is enough reason to get rid of him to begin with) plus his history meant screw it take the loss and just get rid of him more trouble than he's worth. Which is the ultimate summation of his time here, a very good 6 month period (launching the ball to Carrolls head) compared to 3.5 years of bad headlines for the club, bans, injuries and prison. Lush Vlad
Pretty fair I guess. I'd argue he had a good season for us and could have been potentially very good for us, if the 4-5 games or whatever it was in Keegan's 4-3-3 was anything to go by. Sadly, the rest was a load of shit and injuries like you say.
Stifler
I'm staring to get a real soft spot for him. He seems to genuinely have loved playing for us, that says a lot when he was in the team which went down and stuck around in the Championship. It brings a smile to my face the fact that a player who had no previous connection to us and who played for us during one of our worst spells and stuck around to help us get back up, obviously didn't want to leave. and still loves. How many players are like that these days, once a player leaves a club unless it's one he supports then he will probably not think of them again. Which is the ultimate summation of his time here, a very good 6 month period (launching the ball to Carrolls head) compared to 3.5 years of bad headlines for the club, bans, injuries and prison. Barton joined QPR in August after being placed on the transfer list by Newcastle following a Twitter rant in which he criticised the club's board. He has subsequently spoken out against the regime of owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias and today went a step further by alleging he and other big-name players had been forced out of the Tyneside club. Asked if he would rather have stayed at Newcastle, Barton, 28, said: "I think everyone knew that. "It is disappointing times and it's sad when Newcastle's best players are leaving to go elsewhere." Barton was keen to pay tribute to the Newcastle fans. "I've an incredibly special relationship with the Geordie nation," he added. "Unfortunately they weren't the decision makers at the football club." He was made available this summer on a free transfer after using Twitter to criticise the club's transfer policy. Barton told BBC Sport he did not "say things for effect or to rock the boat". "I think footballers are massively well placed to make decisions because they are in the heat of the battle," he said. "For me the most important thing is, if someone asks me a question, I tell them the truth. "For some people they don't want people to know the truth. "Ultimately people pay to come and watch the football. They don't come and watch how people run the football club. "Newcastle, as a playing squad, were the only club in Premier League history not to sign a bonus sheet. It was unprecedented. "We refused as a playing staff (to sign) as they tried to railroad the players into signing a bonus sheet. "In their opinion we were paid workforce. They thought we were Sports Direct and we should do what the subordinates at Sports Direct do, forgetting they were dealing with 20-odd egos, probably 10 self-sufficient men in a position to make a number of different judgements. "Myself and the bigger name players at the time advised the playing staff because we were head of the playing committee not to sign the bonus sheet and that filtered back to boardroom level. "It's no coincidence that I was given away. "It's all about power and control. They are running the football club and it's going really well for them at the minute but that's more a testament to the players and the fans." Barton also claimed promises made to him by the board were not fulfilled. He said: "They promised a number of different things and delivered on very few of them. "At Newcastle I couldn't take to the pitch and lie to the fans and be a part of it.You are doing it for yourself, the fans and the football club but if you fundamentally despise everything that the owners stand for it is very difficult. "I am a man of principles, I am a very principled individual and for me taking money off fans and taking the p*** out of them is not what I am about. "I would rather walk away with my dignity and self-respect intact and I feel I have done that."

HawK
I'm far more ready to believe anything Joey Barton says over anyone employed by Newcastle United or Sports Direct.
Superior Acuña
I like Joey. He's not as good as he thinks he is, and can talk s****, but overall he's a lot more interesting than you're average footballer. He's one of few I could actually imagine enjoying a pint with. Also I touched his hair at the Plymouth pitch invasion, more than I can say for any of our current lot. Would have been fun watching the inbreds trying to work out how to signal '9-1' on their eight fingers. To be fair, trying to figure out how to express nuanced debate in response to bollicks footy chants at away matches is fucking frustrating.
Ronaldo
I don't like Barton, certainly not as a player, but so what if he called Shearer a few daft names? He's a fucking saint next to Nile Ranger, too.

Cronky
Attaboy, Joey. Team at the wrong end of the table, playing fellow strugglers, and you leave them to cope with 10 men plus your absence for 3 more games. He did something similar with us when he decided that taking Alonso out was more important than helping his club to escape the drop.
