"LONDON -- A fan punches a police horse as the streets of Newcastle are turned into a battleground." - Little old Noocastle, London?

"Newcastle was also forced to condemn its own fans on Monday." - Would like to know where the force came from...

And, as an afterthought,

"in Brazil, two Ceara fans were shot in the head after being confronted by supporters of local rival Fortaleza." - Priorities in order, then. Down with England, but those zany Latins...

Obviously shit journalism is worldwide, but sad that we're anywhere in that picture. Fwiw the boss in my city centre bar said there was nothing kicking off there, just a few idiots acting out up the street as they would do any other time the opportunity presents itself. Like every Friday and Saturday night. Still, stories have to be spun and submitted, unfortunately. I couldn't live with myself if I was a professional liar, like.

Sigh.

From tweets of @JNorthcroft

Figures in today's Times show which clubs outperform their wage budget. Kudos to Swansea, Everton, WBA, Southampton - and Manchester United

Also striking in Times figs: only one club with wage bill less than 50% turnover. Norwich, though MU and Swansea close

Wage budget table: 1. City 2. Chelsea 3. MU 4. Arsenal 5. Liverpool 6. Spurs 7. Villa 8. Newcastle 9. Sunderland 10. Everton 11. Fulham.12. QPR 13. Stoke 14. WBA 15. West Ham 16. Wigan 17. Norwich 18. Swansea 19. Reading 20. Southampton

Fernandes using more debt to fuel his spending plans.  It's all going to fail spectacularly with QPR and Caterham imo.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said it will upgrade the three Golden Eaglets players that failed the mandatory Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test at the on going African U17 Championship in Morocco to the U-20 national team.

Nigeria was caused a huge embarrassment, when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) excluded three of the players registered for the African U17 Championship by coach Garba Manu, because they were detected to be above the stipulated age limit set for the competition.

The affected players are Wilfred Onyinye Ndidi (Nath FC, Lagos), Ibrahim Abdullahi (Sardauna Academy, Kano) and Emmanuel Asadu (Amuneke Academy).

Their exclusion from the tournament will also force Nigeria which gave Ghana a 6-1 hiding in the first game on Sunday, to play their remaining matches at the tournament with 19 players.

But NFF Secretary General Musa Amadu said Monday that the federation had a different idea as it has now asked the coach of the Flying Eagles, John Obuh to draft the affected players to the U-20 squad ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign in Turkey.

This decision, according to Musa was made because the players in question are good enough to fortify the Flying Eagles which also came under scrutiny after their not too impressive performance at the African Youth Championship in Algeria.

Amadu, who wondered what went wrong with the MRI scan, said all players Nigeria considered for the U-17 campaign were properly screened and certified to be within the age limit, in line with FIFA requirement last year, as the key condition for the eligibility of the players in the African qualifying tournament.

According to him, the affected players all fell within the required minimum limit of 6.5 during the conducted test last year, only to now be considered overage after attaining the 6.6 limit which is above the required limit.

Nigeria will meet Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday in Marrakesh their next match at the African U-17 Championship
