Steve Harper rejoins NUFC as Academy coach

Cant we have one of these every year  :smitten:

Would be canny to see a 7 a side type tournament at SJP like the 5's at the arena with NUFC legends and Sporting, Ipswich, PSV, Barca etc legends each summer for charity. Make a day of it.

I'd buy into that.

What did you people make of the crowd last night?

I was in the East Stand and thought that the songs/chants were fairly low key considering the players that were on the pitch.

I couldnt make it sadly. Seems a mixed reaction depending where people sat.

Few Shearers, few Andy Coles, few Nobby Solanos, couple of one bobby robsons/Shay Givens/Gary Speeds, lots of one Steve Harpers, shit loads of one joey bartons. About all there was really. Low key as you say.

Canny but couldn't help but think the strawberry corner thought it was a run-of-the-mill PL game.

I wasn't overly impressed with the crowd, but I just put that down to being in the East Stand. Lovely view, no atmosphere. I heard a bit of noise from the corner but having stayed there in our usual seats for Europa League games last season I was wondering if it was mainly a younger crowd again.

Not sure why people are complaining about the atmosphere tbh.  Friendly game, lots of subs happening, quite a few families/kids in the crowd.

I don't have a single complaint about last night, £10 was a bargain.  I was given the chance to see some of the best players I've ever seen in a black and white shirt playing within a few miles of home and I couldn't stop smiling for 90 minutes. If was brilliant and will probably the highlight of the season for me.

Agreed, fantastic value for the price.

Steven Taylor talking about the game in the Chronicle:

"My testimonial will be in the next couple of years, then I’ll start thinking about it but it will be hard to top last night. There were a lot of international legends there and it was fantastic for Steve to get that level of support."

Completely agree, it was a brilliant night and was great to feel a bit of passion around the place again.  Though saying that, after I got home, it made me realise how detached I am from this current lot we have.  Back then, the players seemed to bleed black and white and you always felt they had done you proud after a game. even now when they were hobbling around in slow motion, It was just bringing memories back of them all in their prime, and how fantastic it has been to watch such quality players playing for us.

Completely depressing when you look at it now. Apart from Ben Arfa's tricks here and there, the rest of them wouldn't have me shelling any money out to go watch them play in a testimonial.  They just don't have that pull like the players of old.

Aahh bring back those good times!

What a wanker.

Yeah, God forbid he answers the likely question, 'What would you do for your testimonial?'.

He also said, "I was there last night watching and it was incredible, so many people were talking about it. Many teams in the country don’t have that level of support from the crowd for a charity game, they might get 15,000 or 20,000 if they’re lucky but nothing like 50,000 but that is what Newcastle is all about."

I don't know why anyone bothers posting Taylor's guff.

What was it was he said in June? He was glad Kinnear's back because we were flying under him in 2009 before he nearly died? He's a serial arse muncher.

He's as discerning and positive as a puppy.

Puppie aren't wankers.

Especially ones waking up every morning and realizing they're getting paid to play in the prem for Newcastle.
