Michael Owen ruled out for rest of season

Manchester United striker Michael Owen will not play again this season after pulling his hamstring in the 2-1 Carling Cup win over Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old, who scored United's equaliser at Wembley, pulled up while chasing a through ball in the first half and was replaced by Wayne Rooney.

The injury all-but ends Owen's hopes of playing for England at the World Cup.

"It is a terrible blow for the lad," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "It is more serious than we thought."

Owen, who will have one year remaining on his two-year contract at Old Trafford at the end of this season, is to undergo surgery on Monday.

He has scored nine goals in all competitions this season, including a hat-trick in the Champions League win against Wolfsburg and an injury-time winner in September's Manchester derby.

More to follow.

Really hope Man U don't win the Premiership, just so the little gimp doesn't ever get that medal.

Him not being there would be a nice silver lining to England winning the World Cup as well.

He said: "I have loved every minute of my first campaign with Manchester United and have already enjoyed some memorable moments.

"I am determined to come back at the start of next season in peak condition."

Anyone who thinks Owen won't be at Man U next season is wrong. He always stays to the end of his contract.

Except when someone is daft enough to pay £17m and £100k/week for him.
