The Magpies are believed to have told Yoan Gouffran, Haris Vuckic and Mike Williamson they also won’t be assured a regular game this term.

Vuckic fancies a move back to Glasgow Rangers, where he spent last season on loan, while Gouffran has been offered around Ligue 1 clubs by his agent.

There has also been interest in Williamson from Brighton & Hove Albion, but the player has recently made it clear his first choice is to battle for his place.

i.e. He knows he won't get better wages anywhere else.

Possibly not, but it maybe in his best interested to move now for lower wages but over a longer period of time. There is only 1 club really after him, when a Premier League player is on the move a stack of clubs are usually interested, even if they are in the Championship, another year at this level and he won't have any clubs after him.

Tbf kinda hard to sell when nobody wants the player you're selling, same with Gouffran

Which is precisely the reason why we should be paying up their contracts and getting them off the wage bill. Yes that would mean an outlay now but it would free up squad places for players who we actually want.

But paying up their contracts is basically the same as just leaving them there to rot isn't it, in terms of finances?

But why prolong it? Getting in better replacements may mean further wages to be paid but it will benefit the club in terms of better quality available for the first team and will also aid younger players in the squad. I dread to think of our up and coming youth players (when they get to train with the first team squad) learning anything from Williamson.
