If we do arrange a friendly at Ibrox I hope it's on the Saturday before the start of the season as I'm at a wedding up that way the day before.

The Carlisle fans are massive twats. Always looking for bother. I am definitely up for another trip there though, lol.

Hope we go to Ibrox, could be a good trip.

Whats the atmosphere normally like from the Newcastle contingent on pre season away trips?

Spectacularly drunk, I'd imagine. And hope.

CHRIS HUGHTON has revealed he wants his side to match up against top European opposition this summer.

The Chronicle understands that Dutch and German sides have already been targeted as possible opponents during United’s pre-season programme, and the Magpies are currently waiting confirmation of the matches on the continent.

Hughton is also hoping to arrange a high-profile home friendly against attractive Euro visitors at St James’ Park in August.

Toon fans have been starved of European trips since participating in the Mallorca Summer Cup in 2008 with Geordie supporters making do with visits to Ireland and Scotland last year for games against Shamrock Rovers and Dundee United respectively.

However, Hughton, who is keen to use pre-season as another bonding exercise, like the visit to Ireland last summer, told the Chronicle: “Ireland is something we’re doing again.

“The pitches were very good, as were the conditions.

“It was ideal and we really couldn’t fault the preparations there.

“We were able to send the coach over with our equipment, and it was natural for us to want to go back.

“In pre-season, you want to play one or two games abroad, but the ideal scenario is that they’re not too far away, and not the long-haul type of game.”

United will head back to their Carton House base near Dublin a few days after returning to pre-season training on July 8.

Their first planned friendly is on July 17 at Carlisle (3pm) before a visit to Norwich a week later (3pm), while a friendly at Ibrox against Glasgow Rangers has already been mooted for early August.

Hughton added: “Carlisle is obviously the local one and what we’ve done in the last few years is play a local game.

“Norwich are similar to us, in that they’ve won promotion, and they’re looking forward to a season in the Championship.

“They had a very good team this season, and of course they had Fraser Forster in goal this year.

“It’s a good programme so far for us and we’re looking to add to that.”
