"shows how far we've sunk, it used to be spurs who were after everyone we were."

I cant recall exactly but didnt sunderland finish around mid tableish last year? which until recently is what spurs have been for many years: midtable

Was it 2004 we finished in top 7th ?

In one degree its good to not compete with spurs as they must have wasted even more money than us during the last 10 years on transfers. Yes its sad that they still seem to still have a line of credit, when we dont(maybe some bankers who are deluded spurs fans!)

Perhaps our business model of dependancy on uefa games wasnt sustainable. if the wheelsc come off for spurs they could crash and burn fast too?

given the new 25man squad rules, the market for 25+yr olds could take a temp hit. Have spurs and sundeland prepared for the change?

(am not drunk, its just too early in morn to make sense!)

I wouldn't worry, Womble. Harry Redknapp is working his magic now, 12 months until Spurs are in ruins like every other club he's been manager of... allegedly.  :shifty:

Some Journalist on twitter reckons we're watching Mallorca's Pierre Webo. Dont know much about him, VI or any other Spanish league followers; whats he like?

Fast with inconsistent end product.

Like a lot of African players really.

But seriously, the Nigerian team is a great example. Think Oba Martins epitomises it really.

Yes Kanu, Mikel Obi, Yakubu, and all the other African players with differing styles all fit this ridiculous sterotype and epitomise your nonsensical point as well. It is an unnecessary and stupid comment. You really should stop trying to take the piss out of me and shut your mouth/fingers.

Was a total bollocks comment like. Martins wasn't inconsistent anyway. He was generally a reasonable finisher the majority of the time; could deliver a ball or two n'all. Getting into positions/using his pace on a more regular basis was something that was getting better under Keegan, too. Would have loved to have seen him develop under KK - he could have been brilliant imo.

It wasn't about Martins, though. Everyone was brilliant under Keegan - even Butt and Geremi.

There was a difference. Some players actually improved under Keegan, some were just used to their strengths. Like Geremi, he would sit, play balls from deep. Generally just occupy that area of 20-square-yards in the oppositions half. That was perfect for him because his legs had gone. It was similar for Butt. He was still a decent reader of the game at that point; sitting back, guarding the defense whilst Barton and the full-backs did the running - again, it was a perfect role for an increasingly limited footballer.

The likes of Barton, Beye and Martins actually improved themselves ten-fold, rather than simply having their attributes sculptured to fit a system that suited them.

It was just a sumptuous formation really, that one. Tailor-made to suit each and every footballer in it. Would have loved to have seen it built upon.

Yeah, true. But I think that Martins was used more to his strengths under KK as well. It was the attacking style that suited him more than that what we "played" before under Big Sam.

Martins was and still is cack. Fast and inconsistent is pretty much the only accurate way to describe the bloke

He is inconsistent because he hardly got 90 minutes at Wolfsburg. He was inconsistent here because we were inconsistent (injury situations, manager changes)

I think if he got to play every game for a few months in a decent team he would come good.

Martins relies on sheer athleticism, he's extremely raw. I always thought he lacked the footballing intelligence to make the correct runs, combine this with poor finishing and this is the reason he looked poor. A player with Martins' natural physical attributes should be playing on the shoulder of the last defender and generally using his pace to make life difficult for defenders, something he didn't do often enough here.

Now this is clearly not the case for all Nigerians, or Africans for that matter. Just Obafemi Martins.
