Did Bryan Ruiz ever comment on the interest we had in him on the last deadline day or was it all through Douglas, Ryder etc?

aye he said he only saw it on the telly. twente chairman said we never made contact, Jol said we weren't involved. was never any actual bid tbh. makes you wonder what David Craig was on about. think the club was just having a laugh at the fans really.

Ruiz and Ben Arfa either side of Ba is the kind of thing we should be looking at though. Cabaye and Tiote with another, probably more attacking, midfielder behind them.

Yup. The model is Arsenal; have a mobile, good frontman then surround him with quick, technical players in the two winger positions and have a three man midfield where you have a QB, a DM and an attacking midfielder combining. We're really only one or two players away from being able to play with that formation. Ba, Ben Arfa, Cabaye and Tiote are 4/6 of the way there.

whats a QB?

Quarterback. Players like Cabaye, Arteta, Meireles, Scholes are the type of players that excel with a bit of time on the ball, which they'll get with two other guys in the center helping out.

so what position do we lack in playing that arsenal formation?

Aye, got a horrible feeling it's him we're after. Not that I think he's completely dogshit but surely we can go for younger and much more talented targets? Wasn't that Mbiwa available for £5m or so?

Newcastle's Smith Linked

Mon 02nd Jan 2012 23:03

Town have been linked with a move for Newcastle midfielder Alan Smith. The 31-year-old former striker, who was recently mentioned in connection with a return to his hometown club Leeds, could be released by the Magpies in the next few days having made only two appearances this season.

A holding midfielder in the mould of ex-Manchester United and England man Smith has been on Paul Jewell’s wish list since the summer.

Jewell has previously said he’ll be targeting “young, hungry” players in January but the Blues boss could well be interested in someone of Smith’s pedigree, although his likely wage demands would appear to be challenging to any Championship club.

The 5ft 10in tall Yorkshireman could have his Newcastle contract cancelled by mutual consent due to his lack of involvement to allow him to find a new club in January, although manager Alan Pardew may choose to hang on to the 19-times capped England international until he has added to his squad.

Smith joined Newcastle from Manchester United in August 2007 for £6 million, having signed for the Red Devils for £7 million from Leeds in May 2004.

Meanwhile, former Blues boss Jim Magilton is reported to have been approached by Derry City regarding the managerial vacancy at the League of Ireland club.

Hardly "class" for two seasons.  Saylor is the better player. Simple as that, really.

Thing is, if you asked anyone as recently as six months ago they probably would have answered in the exact opposite.

Saylor was in the form of his life before his injury but up until then he's mostly shown to be about on par or even slightly below Williamson.

Williamson now has a chance to prove that he can up his game as well.
