Just a general observation, but I always thought the two teams had to have different colour shorts? Us and Sunderland both wore black yesterday and tonight these two are both in white.

I think you have to have different coloured socks (so that tangles of legs etc are clearer) but shorts are not a must.

I like our away looks with white shorts and socks though!

Who's this ref?

Michael Oliver, very highly rated ref from Ashington. Son of Clive.

Not heard of him like. Making a name for himself. Was his pa a ref or something as well like?

Aye, they were the first ever father/son ref/linesman combo in the league.

Highly rated? You're joking right? Just looks like another clueless plum to me.

He hasn't been that bad.

He's a good ref but needs more experience

That first red card is a terrible terrible decision. What 5 mins into the game? It's such a simple decision too. Simple penalty and maybe a yellow. End of. He's completely ruined the game.

I'd agree with that. I'm seen much worse officiated matches. But he doesn't seem to have much control over the game right now.

No, he is very highly rated. Been getting top marks from the referreeing board, and he is expected to progress to UEFA games in the not to distant future. Details of his record here http://www.worldfootball.net/schiedsrichter_profil/michael-oliver_2/1/1/

That's technically the rule of the game though. When the foul denies a clear opportunity it's a red, which is usually how it works in the box. I hate the rule, but that's how it is.

There were two recovering defenders though. Never a red card for me. Not even close.
