Hatem Ben Arfa

My hunch is that OM were waiting for when Bremen qualified for the Champions League, to see if Ben Arfa would then change his mind about not joining them and / or that Bremen would put in a bid.

It looks like neither has happened, and they're resigned to losing him to us.

apparently we'd not agreed to buy him after 25 games previously. perhaps the villa result has reassured the board that we'll stay up and therefore would be in a position to pay at the end of the season.

Nah, us only buying him after 25 games was always our proposal IIRC. What we didn't want to commit to was buying him if we stayed up. Dunno if this has now been agreed, which could be as you say influenced by the Villa game.

so if he gets to 24 games by April and we look like going down, do we let him rot or risk it to stay up?

Let him rot! Clearly he's destroyed the team spirit that saw us score 6 goals 3 times ina row at the start of the season.

The one thing that keeps going round in my head is that HBA has allegedly said that he only want to go to Newcastle, rejecting the Werder move over a week ago.

So if that is true, and we've agreed terms, etc, surely now it's just a formality.

Of course, where NUFC are concerned with transfers, this could all go to shit in the next few hours.

Don't remember him rejecting the Bremen move, wasn't it Benfica or some other portuguese club he palmed off? As far as I know he wouldn't be against a move to Germany.

does the lad have a history of injury or anything?  wtf would we be pissing around with 25 games for if not?

I reckon it's more in case he's found to be not good enough, doesn't fit in or has another strop. Then we can just bin him with no commitments. However if he's as good as we hope and gels with the squad, he'll be a regular and play the 25 games and we'll sign him.

Seems sensible IMO.

Should injury strike and he only plays 15-20 games but performs well, trains hard and gets on with the rest of the squad then we could still sign him, so it's win/win really.

Werder Bremen are firmly in the driving seat to sign Newcastle and Liverpool target Hatem Ben Arfa , although the transfer has been held up due to a bureaucratic glitch, according to French reports.

L'Equipe said Thursday that the German club had sent a confirmation fax to Ben Arfa's club, Olympique Marseille , on Wednesday night to finalize the transfer, but it failed to arrive due to a technical error.

:frantic: :celb:

The paper said that the transfer should go through today, but if it doesn't, the pendulum would swing back in Newcastle's favour.

AND

Werder Bremen have offered Marseille €7 million for the 23-year-old, while L'Equipe said that Newcastle made an offer to the French champions on Tuesday.

Liverpool, who have expressed interest in Ben Arfa to his agent, are expected to lose out on the player, according to the report.
