Cheick Tioté (1986-2017)

Tiote is the only realistic alternative to Hayden but he's not going to sit on the bench as his understudy. We'll make do with Colback for now but is the one area we could do with a better alternative.

Actually think Clark has been bought to cover the position in front of the back four as well as LB and CB. Rafa mentioned it, not sure that means ahead of Colback if Hayden wasn't playing mind.

I'd far rather see Clark in midfield to Colback tbh.

Absolutely, he couldn't be worse. Colback is one of worst players i've seen playing in CM for us in recent years. Can't tackle and when he does he gives away free kicks in areas that put us under pressure, can't score, can't pass, hides, slow. Other than that he's great.

I'd start him as the only holding midfielder if he's not gone by tomorrow night.

(That reads like a threat doesn't it ?)

Hayden is better

Better all round player maybe, as a solo DM I don't think so. It also gives us a really pushing on front 5 as opposed to a front 4. When teams sit back against us (we had goal kicks against Huddersfield and they had 10 men in their own half and one just inside our half, that was at 1-1) being able to play 20yds further up will be important.

Howay man when has Tiote ever been useful against teams of this standard? He's generally always been a hinderance against teams we've been expected to beat - and that was before his athleticism took a nosedive. He'd literally just help play the opposition back into the game with his stupid fouls in dangerous areas and inability to keep the ball when pressed. Rafa knows he's shit, so it's all moot.

Rafa was picking Tiote at the back end of last season so he clearly doesn't think he's shit. If anything, asking for a fee suggests that he knows he's still got value, if we're letting him go it's because he's got a year left on his contract and he wants a move. If he doesn't get it, he'll probably feature in quite a few games this season.

Steven Taylor too.

Aye. Was pretty obvious that Rafa was desperate to stay in the league and thought his best chance of doing so was using experienced players rather than to take any chances. Soon as he saw that Taylor was utter gash he was replaced with Lascelles, but as we were often on the back foot in those games towards the end, it's no surprise that he kept playing Tiote.

Taylor was dropped as Rafa got to know the squad better, whereas Tiote was brought back into the team and that coincided with our unbeaten run.

You think Rafa actually rated the central midfield pairing of Tiote and Colback?

Tiote yes, I'm pretty confident that if his move doesn't come off he'll  be used instead of Hayden at times this season.

Tiote was pretty good back end of last season tbf, he'd be pointless at this level though

Which is why we've agreed to sell, but at the same time, if the move doesn't go through, he offers the only like for like alternative to Hayden unless you consider Clark a midfield possible.
