"It would be a massive boost to the local economy and could help create much needed jobs here"

What new jobs?

A couple of midweek games at SJP and the SoS??????

The tickets will be sold to local punters and the cash goes straight to FIFA in Zurich

Maybe hotels in Newcastle may be able to hike their rates up on a couple of nights and BA and the train people will gut anyone booking a trip to-from London on those days but I doubt we'd get owt else

All studies about the so-called benefits of sporting fixtures and new grounds show very little benefit

In fact a lot of non-interested people steer clear  - as we'll see in Olympic Year

Amount of domestic and international tourists will increase. I'm sure to prepare for a higher spike in numbers, business' will have to increase staff, which will at least provide seasonal jobs, especially in resturants, clubs, pubs, etc.

Panorama highlights the corruption of 4 more voters.

This should have been broadcast a month ago when there would have been more time to force FIFA into doing something.

As it is the World Cup vote is going to be as we all expected a complete sham.

tweet from henry winter:

So on Monday night, 22 Fifa 2018 voters in their Zurich hotel rooms can watch el clasico, celebrating Spanish football. And then Panorama...

He has a very good point!

Do the swiss show la liga? And can they get the BBC?

Parkinson just tore into politicians etc criticising the timing of the programme on BBC Breakfast.  Bit rich of The Sun to moan about the BBC 'sabotaging' the bid as well.  So when it suits you, you're happy to play the moral hero seeking out corruption, but if we might get something out of it it's best to play along and stay in bed with corrupt officials?

Only the BBC are stupid enough to get the long line of people who decide whether we get the World Cup, and go "You're corrupt, you're corrupt, you're corrupt...." - they're hardly going to respond favourably are they?!

So what are we supposed to do?  "We noticed that money that should be going to grass roots facilities is instead being used to give contracts to companies, not because they offer the best value, but because they're bribing members of the board.  It's OK, though, we won't say anything about it because we want you to bring your world cup and a load of money to our country."

What happens when if we get the world cup and they start fucking us about and expecting us to be equally as accepting of corruption then?

I can't Spain and Russia complaining too much about this all. If we're that bothered by it all, then withdraw the fucking bid.

The World Cup Bid Team might not be worried about it, but that doesn't mean the public shouldn't be and it certainly doesn't mean investigative journalists should be guilt-tripped into giving these guys a free pass and told to go back to sniffing around England players for signs of an affair.  Aren't we a country that lectures other nations about the ideals of democracy, transparency and freedom of the press?

Not when we're bidding for a World Cup! Why couldn't we have shown this Panarama show next week?  It's not the investigation itself, it's the timing. The media have a history of this, like the Sven thing prior to WC 2006. The press have a history of trying to deliberately ruin things for England, and then when it inevitably doesn't happen, they sit back and go "Tut tut, aren't you terrible?".
