BBC Sport understands that Pardew was in talks with Newcastle about taking over at St James' Park as long as 10 days ago.

It is believed Pardew became close friends with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and director Derek Llambias when all three were familiar faces at an exclusive London casino where Llambias was managing director.

Anyone know the name of the casino?  I fancy a crack at managing the club too, my Football Manager CV is pretty decent.

It was the 50 club, don't think it's in operation anymore but may be wrong. It's ran by London Clubs - they run Alea Casino in Nottingham 235 in Manchester, Golden Nugget etc.

I did a short placement there a few years back when I used to be a croupier.

Did you meet Ashley or Llambias? If so you're probably on the shortlist too.

Pretty sure it was Pardew who benched Mascherano/Tévez. I cursed the damn useless c*** every weekend since I got Tévez on my FF team.

Pretty sure it was too, think the guy on twitter is being a tit.

They both benched him and Curbishley started playing Tevez and Mascherano... eventually.

Nah Masch only played 5 times for WHU. Tevez only did anything of note after Curbishley took over and ceased playing him on the flank which IIRC is what Pardew and Curbishley himself were doing.

I worked at the casino that Llambias was running at the time, it was when we had Mort.  :pow:

Never really saw him. Seemed alright when I spoke to him one time. Turns out he's a prick I guess

madras you couldn't be more wrong and have seemingly underestimated the influence of the manager

or i've correctly remembered the start of last season. the players played for him because they liked him, i also still remember nolan calling for a sub for tactical reasons and it was done minutes later.

You haven't correctly remembered the start of the season at all and as I said, completely underestimated the influence of the manager in football.  You've trotted out the same cliches that the Hughton haters used.  Claiming we had the best squad in the division blah blah blah.  Football isn't won on paper and most fans appreciate this.

i said at the time we had the strongets squad, backed it at the bookies and won handsomely.

football isn't won on paper, what does this mean ? surely you look at othet teams an assess them accordingly.

Aye I don't remember Mascherano getting much of a look in. I remember being at the 2-2 home game against them that season and I'm pretty sure Tevez wasn't being played at this point.. may be wrong but that was in January, possibly February. May be wrong, memory distorts over time

Tevez made 13 appearances in 06/07 in the 20 games Pardew had until he was sacked, scoring none. Mascherano made 7 appearances in the same period.

tevez looked quality as time went on, mascherano looked shit.

Cannit wait for 'Pards' to bench Tiote for Smith like

Without a doubt. He'll have no idea who he is. Smith's got a reputation for his days at Leeds, he'll play.

So this incompetent runt is still in the running? fuck me what a shambles. Already heard from so many mates that if we go backwards with this next appointment, that will be it for them until MA is gone. I think this time it will be serious and we will see attendances drop drastically.

You don't know what 'football isn't won on paper' means?

Regardless of whether we had the best squad, Hughton still had to manage us out of the division and he did so with flying colours.  We didn't have the third worst squad the division when we went down did we?  But as I say, football isn't won in paper.
