Starting to wonder if all managers are pretty shite. I'm sure they would have him looking like a solid if unspectacular Premier League level defender. Look at how Terry has gone from a slow, tired and washed up old man preparing for the MLS on the Chelsea bench back to being gone of the top centrebacks in the league under Mourinho. The Chronicle understands that Carver is still in with a chance of winning the job on a full-time basis if he leads injury-hit Newcastle to a respectable finish in the top-flight table. United have not contacted anybody else regarding the head coach slot at this stage. His cause was not helped by a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend as Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace leapfrogged the black and whites. But Carver, who is under contract until 2020 at the club, has been involved in high-level discussions on recruitment for next term, and was at least encouraged by the second-half display against the Gunners. Carver said after the game: “I’ve got a contract until the end of the season, then my assistant manager contract kicks in if they don’t want me to take over for the rest of next season or the following season. “I’ll just do this job as long as I need to. “The one thing I can assure people out there is that I am giving it everything as you have seen. “The players are giving everything and that’s important to me.” Carver’s troops now head to Sunderland on Easter Sunday and have a short gap between the next game due to the international break. In that time, Newcastle’s top brass will hold further talks on new signings and Carver will be around the table along with Graham Carr, Lee Charnley and owner Mike Ashley. When asked if the club can get back to the right end of the table, Carver said: “Of course it can. “We have already spoke about how we are going to invest in the summer, and I have been part of that conversation. “We’ve got meetings coming up in the next few days to talk about recruitment for the club. It is encouraging.” Carver says he will continue to motivate his players as he looks to improve on his record of just two wins from the last 12 games. Any new manager coming in has to work with the exisiting plonkers as they are cheap to to keep on.
