Football's greatest - where does Lionel Messi rank?

Ronaldo just doesn't seem to have the footballing genius brain that Messi and more or less all of the other true 'greats' have. To me he's more like the ultimate combination of ability, athleticism and constant training.

Also when people say that Messi doesn't perform at an international level, they seem to forget Ronaldo hardly has the most success at that level.

The two things that Messi/Ronaldo have is that natural dribbling ability with the ball at their feet and the footballing brain/vision to pass and create for others. That's why I put them both ahead of him. Cronaldo is arguably the complete forward, but he's not the complete footballer.

Aye, when R9 Ronaldo started losing his pace later in his time at Madrid he developed his finishing (or maybe it just came to the fore and he always had it) and became one of the best poaching strikers. Messi's passing and assists indicates that later in his career he could move into more of a playmaking role. If Cristiano's legs catch up with him I don't see where he could adjust his game, he won't be able to shoot from ridiculous distance or break so quickly.

Zidane's 40th yesterday made me realise how much too soon he retired. Could've been like Scholes is now, where people appreciate more with age how good he is.

Messi and both Ronaldos are the greatest in my lifetime. I used to love Rivaldo too, who is underrated. Then again, I always thought Zidane was a bit overrated....probably alone in that opinion.

Agreed..... especially on Rivaldo was a brilliant player in his prime.... will always remember that hatrick against Valencia to get Barca 4th finishing it off with that over head kick  :smitten:

Rivaldo was mint but closer to Cronaldo in style. Selfish, keep trying stuff until it comes off kind of thing. Mint player though.

The main players mentioned in this thread (in the Opening Post, etc) are all 'out on their own' (from the rest) as worlds best players over various eras.

Having seen many of them live a few times, and on television many times, there are two who stand out (even) from those listed in the Opening Post.

Pele and George best.

Both of them had more of all the attributes than any of the others.

Messi is 'getting close' mind!!

All the others mentioned are also (of course) 'very close', but Best and Pele were the best players of all time . . .

In my opinion!

Let me ask you this question..... what was your opinion of Cannavaro before the WC 2006?

Because the WC inflated everyones opinion of Cannavaro.... dont get me wrong he was a great defender but he was'nt even the best Italian CB of his generation.

Hell he was'nt even the best Juventus CB at the time. Another example of WC inflating peoples opinions of players.

as i've said i saw him play @ sjp and thought he was the best defender i'd seen play at that point, he was immense, the WC win just capped it and proved his lasting class...unless maldini is his generation i don't there was a better more consistent CB for italy during his time personally

Pointing to a few isolated games where Messi didn't score isn't evidence of anything, because in those games he was a constant threat and you might recall the other team was resorting to last ditch defending. Both Chelsea and Inter were backs to the wall in those games and relied on a good slice of luck to make it through, you have to against Barca.

You can look at any striker in history and find plenty games where he didn't score. He probably wouldn't score as many goals in the Premier League as he does in La Liga but neither did Ronaldo. He still scores plenty more than Ronaldo in Spain and his assists record is incredible.

He hasn't won a world cup but I always see this argument as irrelevant because football is a team game and no one player wins a world cup. Pele didn't win it singlehandedly for Brazil, he had a world class team around him. Messi went to the world cup with a divided team and a mentalist of a coach. Are people suggesting that Pele would have dragged them to the final?

Cannavaro was comfortably one of the best CB's in the world for years before he won the World Cup.

Not quite in the same class as Nesta, though.

Definitely.

nesta was the "classier" player i agree but cannavaro was equally as effective a CB and he did it for much, much longer at the highest level

Aye, Cannavaro had the traits of the mag whereas Nesta represented the classy, socialist ideals of mackemdom.

How did he do it for much longer at a higher level like?

  • 2 months later...

He scores and creates a lot of goals but that's a bit one dimensional for me, what if you want to start pumping 60 yard balls at him?

In conclusion, he isn't as good as made out and would like shit in the Stoke team.

Actually missed this, but what a shit post. Clearly never saw enough of Rivaldo. 2002 was a prime example of a non-selfish underrated player.

Christ, anything remotely negative abvout a Brazilian player and you won't have it. It wasn't even a slant on him. He spent a whole career being slammed for being a selfish player which was harsh, but he was a direct player who used to dribble and shoot rather than dictate a game. That's not to say he had no vision or couldn't pass.
