aussiemag
We have quite few midfielders. We need an LB (obvious) and a striker. However, if we just ship in another Best/BA/Ameobi level striker, there is little point. That's what concerns me at this point, we are talking $$$ to buy what we need and have shown NO inclination to do that over the last 4 years. It's clear we are only interested in deals that are "value for money" such as Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa. The club is not interested in investing rediculous amounts of money on players as done so in the past, as results showed in the past it is not succesfully on the pitch or financially. oldtype
We have Obertan, Jonas, Ben Arfa who can all play RW. Tiote, Cabaye, Gosling, Guthrie in CM. We actually probably don't want to sign up anyone extra at this point because it gives us some space to give Sammy, Abeid, Vuckic, and other youngsters game time if needed. Signing more players would be nice, but LB, ST, and probably RB and maybe even CB would all be priorities over the midfield positions.

Spudil
If we change our formation like we suspect we will then Bartons role pretty much becomes redundant anyway. Eh? Could you explain please? If we change to a 4-3-3 (for example) who will play the most advanced midfield role?

That would have been Shane Long IMO, we missed out there. Another cheapo French dude is on the cards..... hope they turn out to be some good.

The first post makes sense to me, but it only works if everyone else is fit.

I don't see Barton as good for that role, he's not a very creative player, neither is he a good goalscorer like Nolan was.

aussiemag
I think playing Joey Barton as a right midfielder after andy carroll left was a useless exercise. We did not have the strikers to thrive on the long ball service and were therefore over reliant on scoring at set pieces. We lacked genuine width on the right wing, as simpson doesnt have the quality to overlap effectively. We would be better served palying a pacy winger to stretch the opposition defence more. David28
If the intention is to change formation, why haven't we been working on it all pre-season? Because Pardew didn't have a clue what players he should have been using.

Rich
If the intention is to change formation, why haven't we been working on it all pre-season? We played 4-2-3-1 a fair bit didn't we? No doubt 4-4-2 is very much in the mind as well though. A lot depends on the quality of this striker we get. If people do stay fit and perform to their level then Barton won't be missed too much. Still sad to lose yet another favourite though. Only Colo and Tiote remain.

Playing one up front and still looking for a good striker doesn't really stack up with Ba being our top striker and Carroll's replacement. Unless we're going to play him in the three? thenige
Would say it means Sammy and Vuckic are closer to the first team, but would mean we're doing a fair bit of square pegs in round holes to be honest...

You asked why we hadn't been trying other formations in pre-season, I pointed out that we had done. In terms of this, though, surely any new striker bought for good money is technically "Carroll's replacement"? They'll become our "best striker" by default, basically. Currently it's Ba because he's all we've brought in up there. I can't honestly say I know what Pardew's plans are though. Ben Arfa's injury has knacked things again. No doubt he was a shoe-in playing a VDV role off a striker.
Toon_Crazy
Squad gets thinner, a player who gave a fuck has left but at least that's another wage we don't have to pay. Getting sick of this club. We really could have pushed on this year.
SEMTEX
We don't particularly need a replacement. Saying that, he could've been our only Goalkeeper and we probably wouldn't have bothered replacing him. Unless we can find a 19 year old Buffon, for 20k, on 500 quid a week.
