It's once it gets in the media that it'll make him take notice. He'll not want the full media glare on him and his other businesses. He'd love to have SD plastered all over the newspapers. He'll not want the club to leave the premiership, but we will go nowhere else in cups or euro qualification and no amount of protests or fan pressure will change that. Like said any publicity is good publicity, he's been surrounded in negativity since he's come here yet SD has doubled in size. It seems that many in the media are starting to see how Ashley runs the club and are openly critical of it and sympathetic to supporters but can you imagine the furore if one of the media's favourite clubs was bought purely as an advertising vehicle for another company and none of the profit generated was re-invested in the club. He will get far more criticism for a similar approach to Rangers because of their importance to Scottish football. People ask why Newcastle fans perceive NUFC to be a "big" club but one that generates (and has the ability to generate more) the amount of revenue it does means that it should be striving to be in the top 7-8. At the moment he hold the cards and doesn't need to sell, so anyone who shows an interest will be told to either stump up above market value or fuck off. If his other interests collapse or he suffers ill health and can't afford the time to run it, then he may be in a position where he has to accept a realistic or even aggressive offer. That's what really gets me. A football team and its owner should in principle have the same incentives as the fans. Those should be basic fundamentals but have somehow gotten skewed. How on earth can an owner get away with changing the name of a traditional club to 'Tigers' ffs or changing a team's colour from blue to red? Owners should be absolutely terrified of decisions like this. You have to wonder why it isn't in the best interest of Mike Ashley to provide entertaining football and/or strive for success. You have the sackpardew.com campaign which was probably the closest you'll ever get a protest that was actually noticed since that death threat against Mike Ashley. Not having the media on your side, like Liverpool supporters had with their previous owners, you're just not getting anywhere. I'm not say that those who run these protest should give up. But unless you get the national media on your side, along with those 50K+ supporters attending the home games, Ashley will just continue the way he wants.... What's important is that something led Mike Ashley to put the club up for sale, publicly. Those who like conspiracy theories might say this was just a publicity from the club stunt to make the Geordie fans look fickle, and really backfire the "Cockney Mafia Out" campaign.
