David28
When does Rooney find out how long his ban will be? If it's three games, I'm not sure you can justify taking him. Of course you can. He'll only be banned for the first two matches (if it's a 3 match ban) and ready for the deciding 3rd match of the group stages. How does that work? He'll be banned for the last qualification match which will be the first one of the banned.

Keefaz
There's no chance of it being three matches. Two at most.

If it's a 3 match ban it'll be a problem. Probably he shouldn't go then. Saying that, I'm sure he'll be there, though. Players like Beckham, Owen and even Rooney himself were at World Cup's despite injuries. Rooney at least will be fit if it's longer than the group stages. JH
If it's a three match ban, there's no point in bringing him for the sake of one game.

Guest
Even if it's a two game ban I'd not take him to prove a point. I don't think we'll get past the last 8 with or without him so leave him out to try and teach him a lesson.
Ishmael
Will discuss this when the relevant times comes around. Say a month or two before the tournament begins. Certainly not in October. and fwiw people who are saying they cba about our squad or that it doesn't matter are rubbish.
Revolution Number 9
And injury to Wilshire and it's Parker and Barry... I'm sure Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas will be quaking in their flip-flops.
Cronky
If we're doing without Roon the Loon, then I'd go for - Hart Richards Ferdinand Terry Cole Wilshere Barry Gerrard Young Welbeck Downing Downing to go when Rooney is back. Big ? over Ferdinand's fitness, but if fit, I'd start him. Jones is very tempting but I think he may be a season away from acquiring the composure that's needed in that position at international level. The Prophet
Goal keepers: Hart, Foster, Camp Right backs: Richards Centre backs: Terry, Cahill, Jagielka, Smalling Left backs: Cole, Baines Right Wing: Young, Lennon Centre midfield: Lampard, Gerrard, Wilshire, Rodwell, Oxlade-Chamberlain Left Wing: Johnson, Downing Forwards: Rooney, Carroll, Sturridge, Bent With Rooney suspended in the group I'd probably go 4-3-3 given we'll probably drawn in a decent group, perhps go: ---------------Hart--------------- Richards---Terry----Cahill---Baines ----Lampard----Rodwell----Wilshire Young--------Carroll--------Johnson With Rooney back I'd switch to a 4-2-3-1: ---------------Hart---------------- Richards---Terry----Cahill---Baines --------Lampard-------Wilshire------- Young--------Rooney--------Johnson ---------------Carroll---------------
James
GK Hart Foster Green RB Smalling Richards LB Cole Baines CB Ferdinand Jones King RW Oxlade-Camberlain Lennon LW Young Johnson CM Wilshere Cleverley Milner Barry CF Rooney Wellbeck Sturridge Bent Carroll Team: Hart Smalling Ferdinand Jones Cole Cleverley Wilshere Oxlade Rooney Young Wellbeck So basically cut out the cancers of the England team where possible, and build a young side around Man Utd players. Ginola
Hart Richards - Terry - Cahill - Cole Lampard/Gerrard - Rodwell/Parker - Wilshere Sturridge - Rooney - Young Pick whoever's on better form out of Gerrard & Lampard, while Rooney's suspended play Welbeck/Bent, again, whoever's in the best form. EDIT: Possibly even Cleverley ahead of Lampard/Gerrard
M4
Certainly hope that unless there's a whole bunch of injuries, Lampard doesn't get picked.

James
Cleverly and Wellbeck aren't world beaters like. They play for Mn Utd though. I can see the benefit of having 6 or 7 of the 11 play for Man Utd because they are already playing together and performing well and therefore they won't need to gel or work on team spirit as you already have it. That isn't something that teams other than Spain would have.

Ketsbaia
No matter who plays, England won't win it. I don't really care about them but the ideal squad would have a bit of everything - like a toolbox. Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a good wild card, but none of the wingers deserve to not go. GK: Hart, Foster, Carson DEF: M Richards, P Jones, Terry, Cahill, Jagielka, Ferdinand, A Cole, Jagielka MID: Wilshere, Gerrard, Lampard, A Johnson, Walcott, Young, Carrick, Downing FOR: Rooney, Sturridge, Carroll, Bent (Just missing out are Smalling, G Johnson, Lescott, Lennon, Parker, Welbeck) Won't name a starting XI because that depends who they're against. That isn't something that teams other than Spain would have. You mean the Spanish team that won the world cup with seven Barcelona players in the starting eleven? Quality and coherence are equally if not more important than spirit. Team spirit pushes you to the latter stages of tournaments, quality wins you them. Funnily enough they had this debate yesterday and the opinion seemed to be that because the group of Man Utd players (around ) in the squad during Scholes time in the England team just hung about each other probably didn't create the greatest team spirit throughout the rest of the squad.
