Are footballers not allowed to take a moral stance now? Wonga aren't your average lender.

quotes are that it's a religious problem....seems casinos and ploughing Miss Newcastle are not though.

its all paper talk - there's no evidence of actual quotes from cisse himself.

Excellent point. I thought Muslims were not supposed to have girlfriends (no sex before marriage and all that). Then again some of the Arabic students I have taught over the years have broken every rule in the book.

We had Virgin Money on our shirts this season. What does he think they do?

There's quite a difference between Bank Lending and Pay Day Loans.

This. Wasn't aware Cisse was a regular at the casino's. Hopefully a non-story then and more muck raking on the back of unsettling Cabaye.

Not according to Sharia law which doesn't allow profit on loans.

Well Yes, but if all the Muslim players in football followed that 100% they would never get into the game with the amount of gambling, alcohol, financial products that are involved in the game.

Sunday Sun says "Religious and moral grounds", which seems perfectly reasonable to me. A Catholic player might have a problem being sponsored by an abortion provider but let it slide if they were sponsored by Boots, even though they sell condoms. I'm not seeing this whole 'gotcha' stuff about the fact he wore a Virgin Money top.

People pointed out issues like this potentially arising due to having a morally repugnant sponsor when the deal was struck and it was written off as scaremongering.

This Wonga stuff is bullshit. He wore a fucking shirt with Northern Rock on it. I know for a fact that they're no better than Wonga. Nor are most banks.

Papiss Cisse's refusal to wear a Wonga shirt does not mean he will leave Newcastle United this summer.

The Sunday Sun believes the story, which appeared yesterday, is correct and that there is a problem with the Senegalese star regarding the club’s controversial sponsor.

Newcastle chose not to comment on the accusation that Cisse wouldn’t wear the new changed top that bears the Wonga name on religious and morale grounds.

Cisse is a practising Muslim and is said to be uncomfortable promoting the pay loan company, something that is not allowed in his religion.

However, Cisse has given no indication that it is an issue that could see him leaving St James’ Park, which will bring relief to the supporters as the striker is just about the last player they want to see exit their club.

Newcastle could allow Cisse to wear another shirt in a way of solving the issue.

The club have a installed a prayer room at the training ground for their Muslim employees, a move that was praised by their players.

So they have shown to be respectful of their players’ beliefs, some-thing Alan Pardew has spoken about on many occasions.

But this is still an awkward situation for Newcastle to deal with during what they would have hoped to be a quiet time before pre-season training begins in three weeks time. While some supporters yesterday praised the stance of Cisse, many others accused him of hypocrisy because Newcastle did have Virgin Money on their shirts last season.

Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa are also practising Muslims, but they have yet to make any comment on the matter.

Interest is not paid on Islamic bank accounts

Cisse is happy on Tyneside and if anything has been looking to sign a new deal.

However, Anzhi Makhachkala have made little secret of their desire to sign the goalscorer and would be willing to pay for the £14m-rated player. They will have been alerted to Cisse’s situation and will be hoping that it could help to budge open the door for them to at last lure him to Russia.

Newcastle certainly don’t want to sell a player who is, at this moment in time, the team’s only real goal threat.

And they are in a position to knock back any offers that they would deem derisory for the 28-year-old, who scored in Senegal’s World Cup qualifier against Angola yesterday, which ended 1-1.

Anzhi’s name has been linked with Cisse for a year now and if the striker does leave – and again it’s worth mentioning that United don’t need to sell – they will be favourites to sign him, purely because they have the money.

Cisse scored 13 goals from 47 appearances last season and while this wasn’t the strike rate he produced in his first four months at Newcastle, the supporters love his work rate and knack of scoring late winners.

 doubt VERY much there is any truth in that at all.

Which one?

Him gambling?  Seen plenty of pictures on Twitter of him on the Black Jack tables in Aspers.

I don't think he's spoke publicly about it, it's just something that has possibly leaked or been made up. It could be a problem for a few of our players, if it is something that has been falsified its an odd time to make it up, so long after the Wonga deal was finalised.

Allowing him to wear a different sponsor or no sponsor at all could be a workaround, though how happy Wonga would be about this I'm unsure of. It happened with Kanoute at Sevilla, then he eventually agreed to just wear the sponsor "888.com". It does become a headache if Wonga stick their heels in, as all players wearing the sponsor on their t shirt must be a pretty basic and mandatory requirement in our agreement.

I hope he's allowed a sponsor free shirt and while they're at it they should take it off the children's kits too.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, it isn't a new story. Was mentioned as a possibility in October.

MASSIVE problems.

Defo should be off the kids shirt like with Alcohol sponsorship.

we were brought up in a strict muslim home and can remember my dad kicking off at my youngest brother when he bought the blue away mcewans lager kit.

think it was the last straw for my brother - islam vs nufc , the toon won and he became an atheist.

that's the power of the toon. cisse will see the light.
