Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill says team could be top six Premier League club . . . if they had better players

Martin O’Neill is convinced Sunderland have everything needed to become a top six Premier League club, other than the quality of their players.

O’Neill anticipated a tough first full season in charge of the club he supported as a boy and, with nine games left, Sunderland are in danger of being sucked into the relegation mix.

Without a win in their last six games, O’Neill’s team have lost form and confidence at a bad time of the season and they desperately need a win at home to Norwich City this weekend.

It has not been the season supporters hoped for with O’Neill at the helm and England international Adam Johnson on the wing, but the Northern Irishman is as bullish as ever about what he can achieve at the Stadium of Light.

“The sooner we can get the points [to stay up] the better,” said O’Neill. “I’ve never felt like we’ve been out of it. My mindset is exactly the same as it has been for most of the season.

“I think that to get those points you have to show determination, you have to show that bit of fight in adversity and, in fairness, over the course of the season we might lack a lot of things – we lack real true ability in the team – but I’m not so sure that I would always question the desire of the players.”

But with a large and loyal fanbase in the north east and a generous benefactor in American owner Ellis Short, O’Neill feels safety will just be a step towards emulating the likes of Everton in the Premier League.

“It’s been a tough season, but I knew it was going to be a tough season for us from August time,” he added.

“Everton is the case in point. There is absolutely no reason why Sunderland cannot be there. We are not a top-six team by any stretch of the imagination, but Sunderland is a top-six club in the making. I genuinely believe and I’ll believe that until the day I leave this earth.”

I get on with mags but i'd never dream of licking their arse like some on here do..."oh maggy maggy, your team is wonderful, can we come along and watch the game with you" f*** offf.

I imagine he said this in a high pitched 'gay' voice while dancing around on his tip-toes. "mag sympathisers and fair play merchants"....What a bitter, laughable bunch of small-town dicks.

All of the Portugese posters are welcome to nip over to RTG and give them grief about the stadium too, every Mackem I know tells me Benfica coppied their name for the stadium, it's literally all the go onabout. The absolutely hate Vasco da Gama too, they cannot stand the man.

Those wankers... Their Stadium was built in 97 our old date 1954

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill says team could be top six Premier League club . . . if they had better players

etc

So Martin, your team are a top six side in every way, apart from the only thing that you've had any control over?

Even if we say they're a top six city and top six stadium with top six support (which is almost enough of a claim to get you sectioned by itself), all those things are outside of O'Neil's control or even his influence. He has nothing whatsoever to do with any of that.

The only thing he CAN control is the quality of the playing staff. That's his remit, nothing else. And that's the bit he thinks is shit.

If he had any self awareness he'd just resign and retire from football. Thankfully he won't and I hope to god he gets more money to spend in the summer. He's doing a fucking brilliant job IMO.

aye, they have blatantly chose this game to use one of norwich and our fixed match allocation at the same time, so they only ruin one match not 2,, like when they had West Ham v Stoke
