'Fantastic''s pushing it. I'd be pretty annoyed if we'd come out with less than that.

Agree, if we beat Villa it would have been fantastic. It's about what i expected tbh although i thought we would beat Villa and draw against Spurs.

Beat Norwich and Reading and then it's fantastic IMO.

The lack of good performances holds me back from saying the start has been anywhere near fantastic.

We were fortunate to beat Spurs and should have lost on Monday. However the results have been pretty good and if we can move things up a notch on Sunday then ill be pretty content.

Agreed on performances, but i don't know about the rest but i was talking from a mere results point of view.

Performances will eventually pick up it seems this is how Pardew works, steadily pick up results through solid displays and after a while the performances take over when the confidence is buzzing.

Not at all worried about the performances as long as the results are coming because i believe it's only a matter of time before the performances come too.

Vastly better is harsh on Hughton, whom maybe was limited but was exactly the right man at the right time to turn us around following relegation. I still feel he was harshly done by, glad he's in the premier league again but worried Norwich's players aren't quite good enough to keep them up.

Mourinho bigging him up on SSN.

"I'll give you a name, because normally when I speak of England, I speak about the best ever, my friend Sir Alex. Let's say for example, Pardew. What talent he did in Newcastle over the past year. A very difficult place to work, we understand that, because of the passion of the fans and the responsibilities, and the traditions of the club, it's not an easy place to work. What he did was amazing, he almost pinched into the Champions League...he almost brought Newcastle back into the Champions League. He was the Manager of the Year for the Premiership."

ALAN PARDEW believes his Newcastle United players are on the verge of replicating last season’s fabulous football that took them to the brink of the Champions League.

Their record in the Premier League so far is one win, two draws and a defeat. Nothing to write home about, but neither is it reason for any supporter to write off the season after only four games.

In saying that, failure to beat Norwich City at home today would see justified criticism come the way of the manager and the team from the Toon Army.

Pardew knows some of the football produced so far hasn’t been top notch, but has seen evidence that the Newcastle of this season is not so far away from finding the form of the previous campaign.

He said: “The draw at Everton last Monday was an important point. Momentum in this division is critical and I admit we haven’t set the world alight this year.

“We haven’t reached the dizzy heights we reached last year, in our performance levels. However, that doesn’t mean to say we’re not far away. I don’t think we are.

“We’ve got four or five of my best players coming into form a little bit. Demba Ba found his feet at Everton, while Yohan Cabaye found his feet in the second half, and suddenly we’ve got three or four looking like they’re ready to go. Hopefully the team will follow.

“We’ve had two really poor first halves for the last two Premier League games.

“The first half against Aston Villa wasn’t good and, obviously, at Everton we were poor in the first half.

“So we really need to start this game well, and I think that’ll be crucial to setting our fans up in a positive mode, and setting us up hopefully for a victory.”

Pardew, rightly, made the point that while Newcastle haven’t quite hit the ground running, it’s not as if they have lost every match, which would be more concerning.

He said: “All teams go through periods when you’re not performing at your very best. We’re kind of in that zone, but we’re picking up points.

“That enhances my feeling that we’ve got a good side, because we will play well, and when we do we’re going to win some games.

“I don’t think last season’s fifth place was a flash in the pan. I think we’ve kept the best players. If we’d lost one or two, you could question whether we could finish that high.

“Can we compete to that level? We hope we can. But 10 games will tell us a little bit more.

“All managers will tell you that. I think the spirit has definitely improved after the Everton second half. I think we’re well set for this game, and for the next few.”

The return of Chris Hughton to St James’ Park provides an interesting back-story to this afternoon’s match.

Pardew has had to talk about his predecessor more than he would have liked over the last few days, although he has graciously given the man he took over from almost two years ago his place in Newcastle’s recent history.

Hughton will get a good reception today, but this is now Pardew’s team, even if he paid tribute to what the now Norwich manager achieved before he arrived on Tyneside.

Pardew said: “I feel as if it’s my team, but I can’t take away the work that’s gone on before.

“I’ve left clubs like Southampton, Reading and West Ham and I think I left a good base there.

“Chris can say the same here; he left a decent side and a good winning spirit.

“Not only does Chris deserve credit for that, but some of the senior players do too: Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton, Andy Carroll, Jose Enrique, Alan Smith.

“They all played big parts in that first, important year when you need to stabilise yourself. Chris did a super job, we’re all aware of that.

“I wasn’t party to why he left and I don’t really want to comment on that.

“All I can say on a professional level is he did a super job. I’ve benefited from the spirit that him and the team and the players put in place here.

“But you have to also pay credit to Mike Ashley in Chris’ time. Chris was left with more or less the Premier League team that came down.

“That’s a strong side to play in the Championship, and you’ve still got to lead them and do the right things. Chris did that.”

And Pardew reiterated his desire for the Hughton love-in to be brief.

He said: “Chris coming back will be a nice start to the game. The fans will thank him for what he did. But then they need to support us, instead of worrying about chanting Chris’ name all game.

“Let’s get it over with, and let’s then get behind our boys. I think our fans have been a little bit frustrated with our performances, so they want to see us play well, and it goes hand in hand.

“So they give us a positive vibe, and I hope we’re going to play well for them.”

Love it how much he seems to care about us really. One day maybe, one day....

A few years ago I was just chuffed that Mourinho knows who we are ;D Now he's texting our manager, talking about us in the press etc.

Jose, you've called it a difficult place to work - do you fancy the challenge of coming here and making it work? C'mon....

Mixed bag today imo. We won, but my concerns over the formation are still there, it's just not good for creative football when you've got wingers on the wrong sides.

I also thought he completely ballsed up the last 20 mins by removing HBA and Anita from the right (where all our success came from) just to give Obertan some time. Why? He's shown next to nothing and the game needed Shola.

Don't even want to discuss the free kick tactics in here.

Still massive room for improvement imo, and I do like Pardew.
