I used to think West Ham was short for something (Hammersmith? Hamilton?), like West Brom.  Nope, it's just Ham.  http://i.imgur.com/7dN9Z.gif

A settlement in the area named Ham is first recorded as Hamme in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 958 and then in the 1086 Domesday Book as Hame. The earliest recorded use of West Ham, as distinct from East Ham, is in 1186 as Westhamma. It is formed from Old English 'hamm' and means 'a dry area of land between rivers or marshland', referring to the location of the settlement within boundaries formed by the rivers Lea, Thames and Roding and their marshes.[3]

On Saturday night I went to the Orlando City match here in Orlando and my wife's friend who brought her boyfriend who's from London and is a West Ham supporter. That c*** met me for 5 minutes and already tried making fun of us for getting relegated, "no chance you keep Rafa", Should have kept Pardew, Championship is a tough division etc, hates Andy Carroll. So this f***ing guy, been living in NYC for a good few years now, comes down to my city, to watch my local side play a match, is with all of my friends....and decides he's going to just go all mad bantz to make friends? Nahhhhhh, hope West Ham burn in hell now.

Had a similar experience a few years ago met a west ham fan in a bar in ireland we where having a bit of "banter" at the start but eventually the argument got a bit heated when we where discussing who the bigger club was, he then started to chat shite about "when was the last time use won something" I replied that they weren't much better there was only an eleven year difference in the last trophy that we won, he went nah mate we won the league cup in 94 !!! After about ten minutes of laughing at him I got me phone out and showed him that villa won the league cup in 94, he then grabbed me phone and fucked it to the floor, obviously we started to scrap before both of us where removed from the public house in question .... But aye I hate West Ham too

I honestly thought it was short for West Hampstead and East Ham was short for East Hampstead. No idea where I got that from.

Love this story; love that you scrapped with him after he threw your phone. That Guy sounds terrible. Regarding my story, the audacity of someone trying to have 1 sided banter with a guy you don't know, in his home town, with his friends & wife...idiot. I was this close to literally only talking about Payet + Great Season. Cunt.

It's an Old English suffix for farm/homestead.

The amount of places in London that end in the word HAM is absolutely unreal

Big club "banter" is the worst. It's honestly very easy to measure how big a club is.

Fan base + Attendance + Commercial Income = How big is the particular club in comparison to others judged by the same criteria.

Trophies does not make one a big club. It makes you a club that win things, which in turn might boost your fan base, attendance and commercial income and eventually you'll become a big club.

There's a lot of "big" clubs out there that don't really win much, but that doesn't make them small clubs. You don't fucking measure the size of a club based on trophies. I get so angry. It's just fucking common sense to actually judge the size of a club based on the factors that actually matter in the equation.
