They are the 4th richest club in the world without a trophy for 8 years. Even Ferguson would had been sacked if he went that long without success, it's Arsenal's 2nd longest drought without a trophy since the 2nd World War. They've had their best players sold season on season. They've not been able to pay the fees and wages that Man United, Chelsea and Man City are able to because they're paying off the stadium every year. Wenger has done an amazing job to build the stadium, fight against a counterproductive board and keep them top 3/4 every season. Any Arsenal fan that can't see the bigger picture doesn't know a thing about football. Like the 100M Wenger's had sitting in the bank for the last 2 years but refuses to spend? They've done ridiculously well to pay off their stadium in 7 years instead of the 30 years on the mortgage they got to build it. Like I said, amicable split is probably best for both parties. If Arsenal had stayed at Highbury, they probably would have had more success. But obviously Wenger wanted to leave a lasting legacy along with all the other facilities/foundations he's helped build up. Maybe in 20 years time we'll see whether it was the right decision to focus on those foundations over short-term success - if football continues the way its going in terms of financial doping it will probably have been done in vain. The only reason he hasn't done since is because they have massive debts to pay because of the stadium which slowly but surely they are paying off. He just didn't want to jeopardise the long term health of the football club. Oh and yet again they look like being in the top 4 despite being outspent by all their rivals and everyone saying they would finish nowhere near it. Those two went toe to toe, and Wenger was dealing nearly as many blows as Fergie was. Some would argue the injection of cash into other clubs has created a greater and more competitive league and broke up that duopoly for the better, it's a matter of opinions - however there is no doubt that Arsenal have been set back ever since Chelsea were bought out. Those debts are manageable by the mortgage they have on the stadium, they had to pay back around 20M a season which was easily covered by the massive increase in match day turnover from the new stadium. They've had a 100M cash pile for the last 3 years, to which they've just decided to do something with it. He's had money to spend, the club has admitted it for last 2 years when fans have asked the club during their AGM. Arsenal fans are more pissed off with the lies the club & to a smaller extent Wenger gave to the fans that the move and subsequent increase in ST prices would allow them immediately to compete in wages & transfer fees with almost anyone in the world. It was less than Man U, but by less than 20M - not orders of magnitude away. In contrast, Spurs' was 53M less, and Newcastle's was less than half the amount - a whopping 79M less than Arsenal. Of course, this is less than Chelsea, City, Barca etc etc, but not pennies. On this measure alone you'd expect them to be roughly where they are now. They're outspent by Chelsea, City and Man U in the UK, and that's it. Oh, maybe Liverpool if you take into account their transfer spending over the last couple of years.
