What was that Chronicle live feed on about earlier with Steve Harper getting linked with this bunch?

Sunderland are set to sign former Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper to help with the development of England Under-21 international Jordan Pickford.

Harper will be brought in as third-choice goalkeeper behind Vito Mannone and Pickford, despite spending all but two seasons of his playing career at bitter rivals Newcastle.

The 40-year-old is keen to move into coaching and has been working at Middlesbrough’s Academy, combining it with regular work as a radio pundit.

But Harper is keen to continue as a player and Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce feels he will be an excellent person to have around the training ground, where he will act as a mentor for the highly-rated Pickford.

Harper left Hull City at the end of last season and will also look to challenge Mannone and Pickford, who made his Premier League debut for the Black Cats against Tottenham last weekend, for a first team spot after Sunderland sold Costel Pantilimon to Watford earlier this week.

Harper was signed for Newcastle by Kevin Keegan in 1993 and left the Magpies in 2013 to join Hull following their promotion to the top flight.

Bah...
