Neil
What the hell's going on in Hoffenheim? Salihovic scores a penalty then immediately gets sent off. Now Freiburg equalise. Interesting start.
Taylor Swift
People like Jol, Pardew and O'Neill are the best arguments for why every club needs a DoF/Head Scout to sign players, so that there is continuity in the team and the long term interests of the club are looked after. These managers don't care about the age of the players they sign or the length of the contracts given because they're 90% not going to be there when the contracts finish. Their job is to win now which is why they have no problem throwing money at old players which leaves the clubs in trouble in the long run. then theres the other side of the equation where the DOF is all powerful and the manager has 0 say meaning he's getting players me might not want or need and might not rate in the slightest Then you sack the manager and get a new one. It's certainly easier than buying ten new players each year like some of these clubs do.

Then you listen to him on individual players if there's a problem but the general style has to be followed from the first team down to the youth teams. It's foolish to change managers and have to change philosophies.

You appoint a manager and you trust him to make the correct choices you don't 2nd guess him and say we in the boardroom know more about football than you our manager. Taylor Swift
Just because a guy is good at tactics and motivation doesn't mean he's good at spotting good players. That's the fallacy that these clubs make, they believe that managers who are good at one thing are good at everything. It's a completely different skill set and it should be treated differently and the persons in charge should be analysed and scrutinised as much as the manager. Football comprises of so many different issues that require specialised knowledge and experience. One guy is very rarely good enough to do more than one thing, whether that be spotting and signing players or creating a team and shaping it tactically.
