Paul Dummett

Given the criticism he has had he deserves some recognition for his performance at the weekend.

Was outstanding and Ibe didn't get past him once - to the extent that Liverpool almost completely gave up attacking that side.

Not sure that's entirely the truth

The quickest players never actually run the fastest, it's always the ones who 'drop the ball' so to speak and have to leg it to make amends and get recorded. I'm sure there's at least 50 players in the PL faster than Dummett. This is why defenders and shit players are at the top of the list.

Ya I guess players in games very rarely have to sprint flat out for a sustained period of time unless they make a mistake so it makes sense

Dummett is a pretty good 1 v 1 defender when he's around our own box and a winger will try and size him up and beat him. Dummett actually did brilliantly to keep Ibe from crossing many a time. When Ibe broke free from his position and roamed more, it caused us far more problems.

Hopefully his form picks up and he continues to improve. I'd like him to sometimes make a challenge earlier but I guess his way is safety first. Ibe carried the ball very far before Dummett would challenge and would pick up a corner each time. But at least Dummett didn't jump in, not get theball, get booked or leave an open attack,.

I made the point a few weeks ago that he's a very reactive defender, certainly compared to Janmaat on the other side. Hopefully he can build on Sunday anyway, much like the rest of the team. Still utter gash in possession mind.

Yeah he's literally just made that up.

In general he's not great defensively, but when faced with a winger who is relatively predictable he's tenacious enough to stick to his task and stop the cross. When the game is more fluid and open he gets exposed.

Dummett and Janmaat are both poor defensively for different reasons really, Dummett because he's just a very limited footballer and Janmaat because he doesn't know when to stay back in position.
