Might be a bit better now we have Mitrovic to attack them.

Big problem we've had is that we just don't have any aerially dominant players. Even Pardew has got Palace scoring plenty from set pieces this year, but it helps having 2 giant centre backs to aim for.

Would be interesting/depressing to see how often we score from set pieces vs. how often we concede from counter attacks to them.

Might be in our best interests to just lump them all into the stands.

Our delivery is also a big problem tbf

So good he's struggled to get a game in The Championship the last 3 years? I'm no Colback lover (in fact I don't like him at all), but Guthrie at his best in this team would be awful viewing.

That's a good point. They studied the stats for the book Numbers Game and:

"Corners are next to worthless; given the risk of being caught on the counterattack, with your central defenders marooned in the opposition’s box, their value in terms of net goal difference is close to zero."

And with our lower than average conversion rate I'd bet our net goal difference over the last 5 years is minus something.

Probably best knocking it short to retain rather than hitting front post every time.

It could be better, but it used to be awful even when Cabaye was here. I think having a few big players to aim for can make a massive difference. I've always been an advocate of passing football, but every team needs some aerial presence, and we just don't seem to consider this as necessary. Probably because we buy to sell rather than build a team.

Apart from Mitro, a lot of our taller players are crap in the air. Sissoko, Janmaat & Obertan all suck. Janmaat at the far post is beaten too often for a fullback of his size.

Can't disagree with any of that. Seems odd to say it but Debuchy was arguably better in the air than Janmaat.

Aye, Debuchy was a far more aggressive player. Janmaat doesn't seem to fond of defending when it isn't 1v1. When there's a mistake with holding the defensive line, he's often the culprit. Not on his job with runners or effectively communicating to others to pick them up. Rarely drops a bollock though, which all the others seem to have at teh front of their locker.

If it is a choice between him or gouffran in there again, Colback wins hands down.  Fucking hell what a depressing state of affairs. Our midfield is shit.

Debuchy was great in the air for his size. Some games he would go the whole game and not have been beaten in the air once.

Well we do have actual midfielders who we could play instead, such as Tiote or De Jong. Bearing in mind that we already have Anita covering the defensive side of things, plus Wijnaldum in the mix. I'm not really sure why McClaren thought a forward would be the better option.

Debuchy was class in the air for his size, way better than Janmaat

I think Janmaat has the ability to compete in the air, just he sometimes switches off and gets caught by surprise which is infuriating. He played CB in one game IIRC. It's a shame because he's a fantastic player going forward.
