The media don't care if England win or lose. They care about engagement.

As for England failing, it will happen for the simple fact they aren't good enough to win a tournament.

Harsh but true.

Harsh.

Teams win tournaments despite not being the best, and we have a handful of absolutely top class players, including Harry Kane. We have a couple of fragilities but so does everyone else.

We need a bit of luck, like all teams that win tournaments. Luck with injuries, luck with the draw, luck with refs. And we need real togetherness. Now it may be that the press’ bullshit is so intense that it brings the team together - that’s a real thing - but right now all it’s doing is making everyone’s life harder and that really could have an impact.

I don’t want or expect happy clappers and I know that when it comes down to it the red tops will put out their usual bollocks about “England Expects” or “Krauts” or “Argies” or whatever. But what they (The Mirror is the most obvious one, but there are others) are doing now is transparent and pathetic and frustrating.

We won’t win it, an to be honest I don’t give a fuck.

For a long time England winning something was the best chance any of us were too experiencing success.

We’ve experience that now, and to be honest I’d still rather we win the League Cup again this season than England win the World Cup.

Why the fuck would I want football fans of other clubs who I spend the majority of the year hating and they enjoy the majority of the year hating us to be fucking happy?

I mean, I won't be gutted if we fail to win it but I'd rather we did

Well yeah it would be nice, but it’s not going to ruin my day if we don’t and I’m not going to start saying shit like we are 1.

It would be the single most unifying factor this country has seen in a generation. The benefits would be immense - I am praying that we win it.

You reckon? Would give people a lift and bring together a camaraderie but for how long? Feel like it would be a positive blip on an otherwise negative timeline. Maybe it would be something to build from but who’s going to make the case for things improving elsewhere in society?

I'd love England to win it even though I care a bit less as international football passes me by a bit.

One reason would be in assuming we have Newcastle players in the team. I tend to want players in every international team that plays for us to do well, so I'm happy when Bruno or Big Nick do well, and will be if Gordon or Burn do well, etc.

The other reason is that you tend to get lots of non club football fans watching, who maybe only follow major tournaments. I'd be happy for them.

I don't consider them "proper" football fans, but on the other hand, having said I view everything through a club lens, I'm a hypocrite.  Because I'm exactly the same when it comes to say cricket - don't follow county games but will no doubt be glued to the Ashes, and rugby - don't follow club rugby either but will definitely watch the world cup.

Horses for courses.

I find it odd how often people like to point out that they hate watching England and don't care if they win. It's like some badge of honor or something.

It’s just sad

Im not the biggest England fan but the World Cup and euros over the years has brought some good ( and some bad ) moments but it’s a time to just join with everyone around you

I’d love England to win it, just so I can see / enjoy us winning it whilst in prime years (30-40). After that it will be bit meh for me, as the chances of seeing majority of the games with your friends will be really low, so it won’t have the same feeling.

Also some of the games we could miss if we’re in west side. Like who’s watching us at 1am? 2030 will be the main World Cup to gun for, European soil and should be on back of having won a home Euros.

:dontknow: It’s not super-complicated for me I think. I grew up in England and have spent most of my life living in the community/country so I support England. It wasn’t a choice any more than being a Spurs fan was a choice. I just always have.

The key differentiator for me. When Newcastle lose then it spoils my day/weekend/week. When England lose, I'm over it after a few seconds. No heart in it for me.

Again. Watching games. Though haven’t watched a World Cup game since 98…

I’m going to presume that as soon as the football starts I’ll be all in, but it’s a weird feeling really liking this England set-up but not feeling any warmth towards the World Cup. Trump is unbearable and I do wonder what exactly ICE will be up to throughout. Also if Kash Patel is somehow still in position I have very little confidence in the Feds’ preparation for actual terrorist threats etc.
