John P
Just went on the sky sports website to pick my England squad. Centre back options - Tarkowski, Smalling, Dier, Jones, Maguire, Mawson, Stones, Keane, Gomez, Mee, Dunk. No sign of Jamaal anywhere, despite him being better than every single one of them. It's fucking ludicrous that we've got a 24 year old English centre back who's captain of a promoted team that finished 10th, who has been solid as a rock all season in a position that England are lacking genuine quality, and he's not even in the frame for the provisional 30-odd man squad. He's a leader, has a great attitude and above all else he's a bloody good defender. Pace, power, great in the air and decent with the ball. Mental. Maguire has zero ability on the ball - he's just a lump of shite, Smalling can't pass, in fact bar Dier the rest are terrible - Stones can pass but is an awful defender

Maguire being the closest thing to an old school sweeper when advancing with it. Smalling isn’t being picked for that very reason. Dier won’t be our tournament CH. number9shirt
Only one Newcastle player deserves to be in the England squad and it's this guy. The most consistent English center back in the league this season.
Guest alijmitchell
Don't get me wrong, he has been outstanding all season - but part of me wonders if he could really cut it in any other system than Rafa's. I'm not sure he's a particularly gifted footballer, but in our system, Rafa gets the absolute best out of him despite his weaknesses on the ball. I'm not sure England would build a system to suit him in the same way. He's often just passing it on to Shelvey/Diame/Lejeune. Maybe there would be extra responsibilities on him for England. Jimburst
I see people say that quite a bit but really...I don't think he needs to be protected. He plays against the best in the world and frequently comes out on top, it's a bit of an oversimplification to suggest it's entirely Rafa's tactics. It was still Rafa's tactics in play when Lascelles was injured and we were losing every week...
Infinitely Content
Also don't really buy the weak on the ball narrative. He always looks composed and assured to me, finding his intended target more times than not. He's no Lejeune in possession, but he doesn't really need to be. Shays Given Tim Flowers
He's competent on the ball. Mike Williamson was weak on the ball.

Agree with this to some extent at least. He's absolutely vital to us and we've needed somebody like him for years but not sure how good he'd be in a side that's on the front foot most of the time

triggs
England will not be on the front foot most of the time, don't worry. They will in the group bar Belgium and probably against whoever they get in the last
Mole_Toonfan
Maybe not on the front foot but they'll ask to build to play through their CBs which Rafa won't ask of him for obvious (and right) reasons so the weak on the ball stuff will never ever be noticed under his management. Heron
John Terry wasn't great on the ball either. That's why Rio was alongside him. Put someone like Stones alongside Lascelles and two pacey wing backs and we'd be sound. Absolutely love Lascelles me like. My favourite player by a long shot atm. Terry didn't play for a manager who seems obsessed with building out from the back and failing miserably tbf. I don't agree with him and for me Lascelles has been the best English CB by a considerable distance but it is what it is.
The College Dropout
John Terry had two excellent feet. Imo he was a better passer than Rio. However, Rio was a more comfortable player on the ball as in moving forward with it into midfield. Better first touch. England won’t get anywhere trying to dominate possession. Try that and be lucky to make it out the group.
Odear
It’s not just the footballing ability you get with Lascelles though, he would turn that squad upside down. Future England captain, of that i have no doubt. The current establishment will be looking over their shoulders when he comes into the fold. Any 24 year old player that’s willing to slap Mo Diame around for the good of his team is one scary individual.
