The mackems will be absolutely gutted with how happy we are. They sent us down, they stayed up, we should be crying into our broon ale. But we arent, we're f***ing delighted. It will be killing them.

Has it even crossed your mind you may not come straight back up?

It seems a bizarre stance to take. I mean to think there isn't even a slim chance of not coming back up? If it were me and we got Benitez in the Championship I'd be absolutely delighted, but I'm confident I wouldn't be absolutely certain we'd come straight back up.

At least it's brought my Mag mates on Facebook out of their shells, they've been quiet for a few days.

It's going to be an interesting season either way.

Christ he doesn't get it does he? We of course might not get up straight away, but this is about us having some hope, connecting the club to the fans again, and not just having season upon season of directionless, scrape the barrel shit to endure, battling out season after season for 15th. We're living again

Their reaction to the appointment has been hilarious, tbf. Pulling up stats about McClaren's record against the teams Benitez faced and asking how many points we were behind when he first took over; despite us being in a terrible run of form when RB first got here, the time needed for his methods to kick in, 6 of those games being away fixtures when we've been dreadful away from home for years, us going unbeaten for the last 6 etc.

Nowt we wouldn't be saying to them were the positions reversed tbh.

To a degree, yes, but I wouldn't be totally devoid of logic. Things like calling Benitez a busted flush and an 'OK' manager, man. When was the last time they ever had someone as decorated? Someone who's actually won a trophy in a major division the few years previous to their appointment?

How have we tolerated this guy for so long? I would have thought a username like stray mackem would give the game away. Where are you straying from?

Its hurting my head how Sunderland fans use this argument "I would rather have Sam than Rafa because he has never managed a team low down the league" Surely a world class manager can help any team ffs.

Tbh them same people I spoke to said rather have Sam than Jose for the same reason.  They literally prove how small time they are buy saying shit like this..

Oh and the latest one is if he was that good he would kept you up.

ps

Love you Rafa

We should be like a Celtic, PSV, Benfica down there. Even if we have a slightly dodgy season we should win it or at least end up 2nd.

We will win it at a canter man. Record points haul, plus FA Cup. No problem at all.

Of course we might not, but the appointment changes everything and introduces hope

Just a glance at Ready To Groom tells you everything you need to know.  Half the threads are about Newcastle, the rest are complaining about all the threads being about Newcastle

Jesus H! There is a 108 page thread about Rafa which was started 10 days ago! 108 pages!?

And without even looking at it i can tell you what will be in there. Most will be trying to convince themselves and each other that this appointment is the worst decision ever to be made by a football club in the history of Association football, just to make themselves feel better and so they can cope with the news and the other 5% will be saying how it is a good appointment and instantly being labelled "mag cernts".

Got to say I agree with the mackem on a couple of points.

1. I don't think the Championship will be a canter. It will be a 46 game battle playing against teams who will see us as their cup final and most who will set up very negatively to spoil the game. A lot of character will be needed to do what we did last time.

2. I would rather be in the league they're in.

But being in the Championship with Rafa is definitely a better prospect than existing in the PL with Fat Sam.

Ironically if ever a club could have prospered from the bitter pill of relegation it was them. To be rid of the constant weary battle to finish 17th year after year, no matter what they have to resort to in order to achieve it, and take the opportunity to rebuild their team and start winning games again, would have been perfect for them.

As it is they can look forward to the equivalent of "sticking pins in your eyes" Fat Sam football and maybe celebrating scraping their way to avoiding relegation once again.

Plus all their fan passion comes from the desire to outdo us.  They're happy to put up with shite, but if they're looking shite with a derby looming then they'll agitate to get a change of manager. Without that they could easily sleepwalk to relegation without much of a fight.

They'll be relegated this year, they haven't got us to steal the points from that'll keep them up again.

Apart from the points we gave them, we also gave them the only full house they ever get, though latterly they've even struggled with that.

What was it - barely 30,000 in the ground for a cup semi against Man Utd when they couldn't give tickets away like they do for league games ?

Our relegation is really quite a negative for them - though I don't think many of the halfwits will see it like that
