Don't we have any kids coming up through the academy?

Of course we do but the academy conveyor belt bypasses us and goes straight to Blyth Spartans

Newcastle are keen to revive their bid to sign Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney in the summer.

The 26-year-old was called up to the Scotland squad this week after his performances in the Championship.

His promising displays have also caught the eye of Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez.

Newcastle made enquiries in January but Fulham were reluctant to sell their player of the year.

Cairney is rated in the £12million bracket by the Cottagers and will not be short of suitors at the end of the season.

He scored Fulham's first goal in their 3-1 demolition of Newcastle last week and ran the game from midfield.

His man of the match display cemented Newcastle's belief that he can improve their squad ahead of a possible return to the Premier League.

Fulham are reluctant to sell teammate Ryan Sessegnon despite increasing interest in the talented 16-year-old while Everton are keen on his twin brother Steven.

£12mil would be a decent deal should we go up

Were January stories peddled not £20m for him?

We really don't need more s**** from the provinces.

Yep. And while we're on, we could also chuck that (jellied eel munching?) blue arsed Ritchie back ower the wall, quick smart. Would be tragic for pseudo sweaty-sock Cairney to oust your favourite post-Batty central midfielder.

Ben Gibson:

Newcastle United have been linked with move for Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson this summer, should they return to the Premier League.

The Magpies could even swap places with Gibson’s Teessiders for the 2017-18 campaign, with Boro’s top-flight future looking far from certain.

Gibson is one of managerless Boro’s hottest properties, and while they resisted any attempts to lure him away from the Riverside in January, they would have a harder job in the summer should they be relegated this season.Chelsea and West Ham are believed to be keen on the £20m-rated defender, who can play at centre-back or left-back, but Newcastle have been quoted as 8/1 to land Gibson by BetVictor.

That still puts them behind the two London outfits, and the likes of the Manchesters City and United, but could indicate some interest on United’s part.

Rafa Benitez knows he has to strengthen his side for a Premier League campaign, and will have talks with owner Mike Ashley over the extent of his transfer budget at the end of the season.

However, it is perhaps unlikely that he will be willing - or able - to spend such a large amount on one defender, with attacking options thought to be the Spaniard’s priority.

Ciaran Clark and captain Jamaal Lascelles’ partnership at the back has been one of the foundations of United’s title bid this season, and although Benitez may feel he needs more options at the back, Gibson could be deemed too expensive.

But any move would at least offer the England Under-21 international the chance to stay in his native North East.

Aye, Gibson is a good player but there's no way we'll pay the required amount for him, what with the English 'premium'.

If we are going to stick with Rafa next season - and I realise it's a big if - then we are going to have to seriously think about giving him big money to recruit what he needs. £10m will buy you Ritchies and Gayles, both good players by Championship standards, but if you are talking about top 6 in the premier then we are going to need to pay a lot more to recruit the standard of player who will take us to that level.

Nowt wrong with Hanley

Not as a 4th choice if we had 3 very good CBs ahead of him, but for me we'd need better than Gibson, Clark and Lascelles as the main three. Senior centre-back (repeating myself but in the Richards, Shawcross category), Gibson, Clark and Lascelles would be more than adequate. Not sure Gibson, Clark, Lascelles and Hanley would be, when we still don't know if Clark and Lascelles are definitely Premier League level yet
