An average midtable premier league cb would be a fucking godsend atm, same in a few positions. Not every signing has to be a potential star.

Agreed. Our current team would sink like a stone in the Premiership and the realistic aim would be survival.

Rafa's smart enough to know that bringing in players who have played in England and are familar with the decision may be a wiser decision than signing potentially better players who may not adapt. Look at McClaren's signings - you'd argue none of Gini, Mitro, Mbemba and Thuavin settled into the side. Gini impressed occasionally but his inconsistency (and shameful away performances) didn't help at all. Mbemba was one of our better players at points, but looked completely lost in other games.

Would rather we mix up the signings a little bit with experience and be competitive against the better teams looking at a mid-table finish.

If recent transfer rumours of homegrown players were to be believed it appears Ashley and Co are still looking for value and are targeting players who will only have 12 months remaining on their contracts.

In recents weeks we have seen Shawcross, Keane, Arfield, Andre Gray and Luke Shaw who are all out of contract in 2018 linked with moves.

nothing wrong with it as a strategy as long as it's not the only strategy and they don't bother signing any players to fill holes in the squad when needed if they can't get that type of player

Shawcross would be great. Just saying for the doubters, but look at the pairing Leicester won the league with. Solid, reliable are the attributes we should be looking for. Especially given the proportion of goals we concede from set pieces.

Aye, but they had Kante in front of them, and we'll have Wor Jackie.

We better fucking not have.

On a serious note, it would be better to invest big money in midfield and keep the same CBs IMO. None of them are awful.

You are right. Give the defenders less to do by putting a decent midfield in. The midfield has been such a weak area for us for years now.

How good is James McCarthy at protecting the defence? Not seen enough of him tbh. Is he a massive upgrade on Colback? Pretty sure he's an upgrade alright, but is he likely to make a big difference in comparison to the talentless ginger Screech? Or is he just much of a muchness?

I agree with that, priorities for me are the holding midfielder to play alongside Shelvey and replace Colback, another winger to play opposite flank to Ritchie, a true number 10 and a striker more similar to Gayle than we have right now. There needs to be a decision made on the GK spot too, with Krul coming back who is our number 1 ? I have a feeling Rafa will sell Krul to fund other positions and cut losses on Sels, if he does that we'll need another keeper, unless they think Freddie is ready to step up.

Saying that, there's been a helluva lot of rank individual defending and goalkeeping errors this season that no matter who was in front of them, it wouldn't have mattered particularly.

In midfield we basically need the closest thing to Kante we can realistically find. We currently have the furthest thing from Kante I can possibly imagine (from a professional player).

I think that's what we tried with Saivet.  Just a very very very poor mans version of

By that i mean small man with high energy converted from winger/attacking positions to be a more competitive midfielder in the centre. Unfortunately that's where any kind of similarity ends.

If shawcross comes in, who leaves? Mbemba is the most likely which is a shame as there is a decent player in there. Hanley is the most limited, but has been ok when used this season.

Any of them really, they all have obvious flaws, but Lascelles has time on his side, and Clark has the form with us. I think both Hanley and Mbemba will go.

Ignacio Camacho from Malaga would be ideal as the screening midfielder. Suprised he is still there. Marcos llorente from Real Madrid on loan (doubt they would sell) would be brilliant but probably too big a fish for us to catch.

Awful story that, I would have him no problem but Fulham must be favorites for the playoffs and why would they sell for only £10 million ?
