I'd have less of an issue with people slating him if we had someone better than Darlow who has been taken out of the team primarily because he can't kick past the halfway IMO.

 His distribution is considerably better than our other keepers IMO. Better with the ball at his feet too.

Might organise a few burning Belgian flags to greet him midweek.

Hopefully he will see them from the bench.  He seems canny and that but you don't need 2 months to settle in and catch a ball.

De Gea looked hopeless for about 6 months at Man Utd, and he's the best keeper in the World.

:spit:

After the news yesterday that Matz Sels deleted his twitter in light of the disgusting amount of abuse he’s been receiving from some of us “fans”, /u/your_pet_is_average had the idea that we should send him a card from /r/nufc displaying that the vast majority of supporters are behind him

fucking hell man

If Elliott had looked as flappy as Sels has the hipsters would have had an absolute field day.

This is such a you comment like. Imo Sels is protected by our collective lack of knowledge on him and he's been given the benefit of the doubt by some up to this point. We know what Elliot's like, so he doesn't have that same benefit of the doubt. Don't worry though, a few more performances like the other night and everyone will hate him in the same way that they've hated the proper, local non-hipster players like Gouffran, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Thauvin, Cabella.

his distribution is the only area where he's clearly OK and probably better than what we already have, this has always been a rafa thing hasn't it?  having keepers comfortable with the ball at their feet preferably sweeping up

shame he's no good with his hands :(

Closer to home Pav and Krul were both very suspect in the air for a good long while, coming for stuff they shouldn't and leaving stuff they should come for.

Pav and Krul were nowhere near this guy. This season we've seen Sels stay on his line rather than come to the edge of the 6 yard box ffs.

Under Orders? Other Rafa keepers done the same?

Not sure we can afford to risk playing him, and the situation we are in means we can't really keep playing him just because we want him to adapt. We need as many wins as possible and if taking him out leads to this and eventual promotion, then it's worth risking affecting his confidence and possible long term furture here.

The Belgian goalkeeper deactivated his Twitter account after being flooded with a host of vile messages after the game at Villa Park.

Lascelles, however, insists the fact that Newcastle dropped two points wasn’t down to the 24-year-old.

He told Chroniclelive: “Goalkeepers are like defenders, whenever we make a mistake it gets blown up out or proportion. Much more than when a striker misses a chance.

“Nobody was to blame, he’s kept clean sheets this season and has been excellent. He wasn’t at fault for the goal as there were a build-up of mistakes before that.

“Nobody is on his back and we will take it as a team. Whenever a goal is conceded we won’t point fingers at individuals.

“We will look at it as a team and look at it collectively and how we could have stopped it even getting to that position.”
