Newcastle United 2-0 Wolves (EFL Cup) - 20/9/16 post match reaction from page 13

Missed the game but it seems we were fairly comfortable at the back, other than Lazaar. Considering it was a completely new back four playing together for the first time we must have done something right. How did Hanley and Clark look as a partnership?

I think Hanley is a good shout for a start against Villa

Why not Clark as well? I like Lascelles and Mbemba, but they were both pretty poor against this same side on Saturday.

It certainly wasn't the same side, like, they made 8 changes as well.

Thanks, I'm just catching up here. Anyway fuck them, they are out of the cup and we are still in it, and higher in the championship table. We win.

Just seen the highlights.  What stands out for me is how much better our wide play seems to be under Rafa (and with Ritchie there of course).  Constantly look to be a threat from wide areas and getting some really good balls into the box.

The rebirth of the Gouff is nice too

Lee Ryder gave Lazaar an 8 out of 10 [emoji38]

He can't have been there

Should ask him what his grade would have been if Dummett was on the team or if that exact performance was done by Paul. Bet its not 8 out of 10. Cant see how he could rate his performance better than Yedlin and especially Darlow. That save Darlow made 1 v 1 was match changing. They bag that and their confidence builds after winning on the weekend and who knows how it plays out.

Totally agree about that save. Helped swing the game.

Darlow looked very good - confident on crosses, decent distribution and a couple of good saves when needed. Bit like he was end of last season really.

Yedlin looked good linked well with Ritchie, pacey and defensively intelligent.

Centre backs worked well together - they're going to be second choice pairing but such cover is a good thing to have.

Lazaar had a nervous scrappy start but in fairness he grew into it and was looking a lot better by the end.

Ritchie will be so important to what we wish to achieve this season. Very good footballer.

Murphy battled away outnumbered by big physical centre backs but always showed willing. Decent option as squad player.

Excellent crowd - credit to the club for the pricing initiative.

Darlow - Good game, a massive upgrade on Sels

Yedlin - His pace gets him out of trouble, did well going forward

Lazar - Chronic, really really poor both going forward and defending

Clark - Good game

Hanley - Good Game

Shelvey - looked fit and hungry, played well

Diame - he makes things happen, played a lot better than he did on Saturday but does have a tendency to hang on to the ball too long instead of passing

Colback - credit where it's due he had a decent game

Ritchie - Bloke is class.

Gouffran - Cracking goal, cracking work rate, silly and needless booking

Murphy - has a good touch, won a lot in the air, worked really hard but missed what looked like a sitter live late on.

Subs - Ayoze - was poor again imo

Lascelles - okay in the shot time he was on

Atsu - He did okay, nothing special mind.

A post on a wolves forum from someone who was there lays the blame fairly and squarely on a bunch of kids on the coach he travelled on and this was backed up by a couple of others.

said they were a pain on the coach up, got thrown out of The Strawberry for causing bother and spent the whole game in the top corner banging on the advertising hoardings and goading and shouting abuse at our lot who finally snapped on 85 minutes.

he also says they were ashen faced and quiet as mice when they got back on the coach as they had no escort etc back to the coach and the other wolves fans were left alone with what he describes as a lynch mob focusing solely on the half dozen kids who'd worked their ticket and who had shat their pants.

I'd agree, apart from Ryder'a a big fan of Dummett.

Mate said kids were hoying bottles at the wolves fans

Anyone witness anything?

It looked to me like it was the usual cup tie c***s who buy a ticket on the night. Jumped up 14 year olds giving it the big 'un.

Aye it would've been these little knob heads

I sat in front of a bunch of them last season (Thauvin's debut?) in the cup. Scarfs covering the lower parts of their faces. Shouting abuse. Kicking seats and calling themselves the little gremlins.

Little f*** wits.

I know it is a lovely idea to use lower prices to attract a decent crowd to support the team in cup games but, behind me was a group of people, mixed age - possibly an extended family - and the first thing I heard them say as they arrived 5 mins after kick off was "which team are we?"

Controversial (and not much of a step away from giving out free tickets to schools / university in line with out mackem neighbours)  but, why does the club not directly offer group tickets at very low cost to local grass roots football teams.  Me and the coach of my sons team brought a load of our lads along to the match, they loved it.  We booked early and were able to get a load of seats together.  If Newcastle United made an offer really early to the local grass roots teams the ground would be full of kids that are actually interested in football and potentially the fans of the future....
