Regardless of the ultimate outcome, thing will hang over the club like a bad smell & be damaging to all aspects of the club from recruiting playing staff to potential to increase revenue streams.

I would imagine the suits at the FA are polishing their hobnails waiting to weigh into us as well.

There must be a lot of arse twitching in a lot of clubs this morning.

Imagine if we were under a transfer ban next season

It will be into next year before owt is decided - court, appeals, etc. Only real winners will be the lawyers. :(

Ironic if this is the way Ashley's hand is forced on a massive transfer splurge, the fear of an impending transfer ban (assuming we're promoted and no other sanctions take place)

Wonder if it's anything to do with that Mondial Sports Management we seemed to get every player from a few years ago. Payet is managed by them iirc.

Mondial have clients all over the Premier League mind - Coutinho, Matic, Kante, Mahrez among others (https://www.forbes.com/companies/mondial-sports-management/). Would expect more clubs to be implicated if the investigation is linked to them.

...Or he decides to stick in fear of a demotion (& being lumbered with a massive wage bill in league 1 etc.)

Always thought that more than one season in the football wilderness (away from the EPL moneytrain, limited exposure for SD) might force Ashley to cut his losses and sell. Scorched earth line of thinking basically.

I'm hoping, after reading about the Swindon precedent, this is the bomb which scuppers Ashley's rebound back to the money train (of the PL) and brings down the house of cards so to speak.

Do you really think so? Unless we get an actual transfer bad I doubt anyone in football will give it a second thought.

only possible upside of this is that hopefully Pardew is implicated in it somehow and goes to prison

And gets a cell with a randy pervert.

Purple aki with a years supply of viagra and pumping him full of roids every day wouldn't be bad enough for that odious cretin

 that's a very North Western reference. Or is he well known all over?

I believe he's well known allover,  you can imagine it man he'd be like that kid from the film skum in the greenhouse, Aki behind him, a massive Ray Winstone head in the sky just egging Aki on. I'd probably masturbate over it & I'm straight just the thought of the tears running down his face as he's getting pummelled would be enough. Be no dancing then would there ya cunt. I think im sick.

It is understood that the investigation extends to other clubs in England.

Exactly. Think about what Allardyce did and how quickly that was forgotten. Still amazed how quickly he landed another job in England.

I think this atrocity deserves investigating more than tax fraud.

In terms of the relative peanuts involved (£5m in NI and tax across us and West Ham, and possible others), firstly it's not a small amount to HMRC.  If you or I fiddled that much we'd be in a hell of a lot of trouble and, as the statement says, they want to show nobody is above the law on this.  Secondly though, stupid as it sounds, tax avoidance isn't always about the money.  Obviously both us and West Ham would be crazy to risk our top flight status for a few million quid in saved taxes.

If you've done a deal or made a payment you don't want people to know about (either because it relates to an illegal activity, it's against the rules of the sport, it goes against company policy, would appear immoral or it's simply embarrassing) you've got a problem, because even if you wanted to pay the proper taxes on it, you can't.  So because you don't want to put "unauthorised payment to player" or "bung to agent" on your tax returns you've got to come up with some way of doing it outside of the system, or explaining it away as something else.  And as is often the case "the cover-up is what gets you" because now you've broken the law and you've got some very skilled and driven people backed by the government who will be on your arse once they get a sniff of it.  So hopefully the main story is indeed the 'financial irregularities' and not anything they were used to disguise.

If you were Ashley, would you gamble on any kind of tangible investment without knowing the likely implications of any impeding litigation?

A quick outcome (Probably unlikely given the apparent size of the investigation) would be massively beneficial

I`m just hoping I wake up, its Tuesday morning & I decide to take the day off & enjoy last night!
