Rafa Benítez (now unemployed)

Recommended Posts

It's clear China are on the way to being a football superpower in the next 20-30 years.  This sounds an ideal project for Rafa to help with that.

There’s a reason they’re throwing so much wonga at football generally, and Rafa specifically.

I was a bit dark about him going but feel better after reading what I assume is part two of Caulkin’s story - if ever there was a guy someone owning a football club could say “Tell us how to do it right”, then who better than Rafa. He’ll be meal planning the under-6 girls and interviewing stadium tour guides, in between setting winning records and running seminars for Chinese managers.

Bet Rafa knew 44% goals contributed Rondon wouldn’t be kept and they were going to sell our top scorer.

No wonder Rafa ran to China

Why are you so weird ?

All the anime, innit?

Just stupidly watched the Football Joe little video -  "You'll always be a Geordie."Newcastle United fans react to Rafa Benitez's move to China and reflect on his time on Tyneside.  :whatdidido:

The lass was alright but couldn't watch it for the ginger bloke.

Okay, hope I can contribute something for you guys, as someone who lives near China

First of all, I genuinely don’t blame Rafa to go China because he didn’t have much options left, and that’s due to us. There were a huge lot of interests back in April, like Roma, but Rafa turned them all down till the end of June, because he wanted to stay with us.

And secondly, China is a very complicated market in relation to football. There are a lot of hidden terms and rules that are not disclosed to the public. For example, a lot of managers contract has a release clause that, if the manager has lost three games in a row, the club can sack him immediately without any compensation paid. In addition to that, there are a lot of requests from owners and even the govern bodies, and there’s basically no such thing as control of transfer. One recent example is most of the national team players are forced to transfer to Evergrande for a pre-determined fees set by the government, in order for “better preparation for World Cup 2022”. This ridiculous order had forced the reigning league champion to sell their MVP Wu Lei to Espanyol last January in order to prevent financial loss.

I think Rafa has been badly advised for this move.  I ain’t disappointed, I just feel sorry to this legend that he had to make this move because he wanted to stay with us, the real fans who really care for the club.

He won’t last in China for long. Worst fit imo. He would be back to Europe within one year.

Rafa is a top manager but a terrible picker when it comes to jobs and must have the worst agent in football (would have had to pay Newcastle to resign last season for example).

Two bits of info, read into it as you may.

Rafa agreed that deal with the Chinese team nearly two months ago. He was never staying once he had the meeting with Ashley.

Charnley is not flavour of the month with those above.

It doesn’t change my opinion of him and I still love the man to bits. But there was fuck all chance of us keeping him. He doesn’t go back on agreements.

The clubs chance to keep him was end of the season. They fucked about and he made a decision and then let it drag on until his contract ran out.

It’s a little disingenuous to let us think something was going to change in those last two weeks. Well he never came out and said it but we assumed he was open to it and he’s happy to let us think that.

He knows he’s on a par with Keegan up here. Untouchable.

Heard a rewmer you don’t need to wait until the last months of contracts, or even if doing them beforehand thus conducting them, solely during transfer windows to do new contracts.

It was Benítez who said to wait until the end of the season. He then had talks with Charnley before meeting Ashley.

The China rumours were about from before the season ended.

And January, late last year, last summer and the season before that?

Club who dishes out contacts to anyone looking like value suddenly doesn’t want to for their key asset.

The more I hear about this the more I wonder.  I loved Rafa and what he was building here, his connection to the people and the city.

But obviously negotiations with the Chinese have been underway for a long time.  I just wonder what his demands and aspirations really were for NUFC.  He has made it known about his 'project' and long term plans etc,. but Ashley doesn't do long term plans, he is a quick buck man and all of the investment that is required/ talked about would take years to recoup. Just not Ashleys style I'm afraid. Perhaps Rafas demands could not possibly  be met.  I am beginning to believe that Rafa has known for some time where his future lay and I wish him well with it.

I hate Ashley and everything he stands for and hope he sells sooner rather than later.

He had the right to demand a fit for purpose training ground and to be able to improve team to fight at other end of table. In background he has lined up a opportunity in case he doesn't get what he wanted. Don't blame him at all as why stay and be frustrated when you can do something else, he always had the power over Ashley due to his stature in the game which is why next manager will be a puppet as that's what the fat one wants.

I fully support Rafa’s decision but I don’t feel sorry for him like I did the day it was announced.

He knew what he was doing and the reality is that he strung them along for those last two months or from whenever that meeting with Ashley was.
