AyeDubbleYoo Posted Monday at 09:11 Share Posted Monday at 09:11 How come we were talking about selling him to Saudi if his contract is nearly over?

He certainly was and Pope wouldn't have let that in for one. If he gets a new contract then it's a poor decision. Pope absolutely lets that one in based on his form this season. He's made 5-6 mistakes/ poor saves this season.
Shearergol Posted Monday at 09:25 Share Posted Monday at 09:25 Not a chance we sign a new keeper and make Pope our number two. Pope should still be number one somewhere (not here, but somewhere). He'll still feel that he can play for England.

If we can can sign him on a contract (possibly on lower wages) then we're sorted for a backup keeper for next season. I think everyone was under the impression that we were getting money from a Saudi club. A fee of around £6m has even done the rounds. The only reason any fan would want him sold is PSR so we can make signings in the future. If we don't have any restrictions on our spending then we can have 10 keepers far as I'm concerned. KaKa Posted Monday at 10:51 Share Posted Monday at 10:51 If we really need to maximise our funds. I could live with Pope and Dubs for another year after this one. Extending Dubs would be much cheaper than spending £20 million odd on a goalkeeper this summer. I'd much rather maximise what we can spend on a right winger and long term right sided centre back, if things are tight.
Abacus Posted Monday at 11:11 Share Posted Monday at 11:11 I just don't rate Dubravka that much now. He was excellent under Benitez, but less so under Howe. He has played excellently these last few games though and there's no doubt his distribution can be a strength. Even if he went for nothing, it clears his wages and if so I'd be tempted to have a younger understudy to Pope instead as maybe it's a risk you'd take to lower the age of the squad. It's a tough one alright, as it depends how far away Pope is and how injury affected he is likely to be going forward. I totally get why people want to keep Dubs, however, and I flip back and forth on this all the time myself.
El Prontonise Posted Monday at 11:15 Share Posted Monday at 11:15 Why do people keep mentioning getting Dubs wages off the book would be a massive benefit? He's still on a contract from the Ashley era, he'll be one of the poorest paid in the team. It'll make very little difference.

The deciding factor was the fee for me having 5 keepers is nuts but that aside if we got what Ben Jacobs was spinning about a 6 to 8m fee then no brainer rock the boat and take the money even if it unsettles the back 5. No fee as its likely to be now saves a rumored 40k a week not a psr dent creation at all and not enough to buy anyone with wiggle room wise. However if in a position of strength dubs gets a contract extension off the back of a run he was part of not the only factor in then the club have been foolish to me. Certainly not black and white but being more ruthless is a skill the club needs to learn. Edited Monday at 11:19 by nufcjmc

I hope we aren't so desperate to keep him we end up giving him a contract extension on stupid wages. He can see out his contract in that case. J7 Posted Monday at 12:54 Share Posted Monday at 12:54 Was I the only person cringing at the ‘we want you to stay’ song? He’s been ok on this run because of his attributes compared to Pope, but let’s not go overboard.

OverThere Posted Monday at 13:00 Share Posted Monday at 13:00 Doesn't it just make sense to run out the existing contract (the summer)? What the last 6 weeks have shown us is that as we get better, a ball playing goalie becomes ever more important. We may need a new #1 in the summer as the next step up. If a bit of love from the stands helps with that, then that’s fine.

I don’t think ‘Martin Dubravka. Thanks for everything and this mini run of form. But it’s probably time for you to go’ has the same ring to it. Weezertron Posted Monday at 14:58 Share Posted Monday at 14:58 I think there's a 90% likelihood this doesn't end well for dubs. And in hindsight you'll be able to argue we screwed him a tad convincing him to stay, due to our absolute awful transfer dealings in our goalkeeping department. I mean that's football. As fans we only care about what's best for the team, so I have no gripe with it. But it'll suck for him if pope returns and he gets iced out.

Pablo Posted Monday at 19:59 Share Posted Monday at 19:59 I’ve not understood this for a few weeks now… why do we need to increase his pay to keep him to the end of the season. He has a contract which he should honour if we don’t sell him.

Not what I like to see especially in football but equally nowt wrong with it to some degree. Gotta look after number one... Pun intended. Probably had a gentleman's agreement to let him go in January if an offer came in, now we need him and to make up for it a bit we're offering him a bit more money to keep him happy and not push for a move.
