Debate on Radio Newcastle tonight is whether they should do a lap of honour this weekend or not

They should at the very least do it for Netflix

A lap of litter picking would be most apt.

Sunderland fan given four-year banning order for calling rival supporters 'paedos'

The Sunderland AFC season ticket holder was convicted of threatening behaviour and fined £450

By Keane Duncan

A Sunderland fan who shouted abuse at rival supporters has been slapped with a four-year banning order.

Jack James Smith, 22, yelled “paedos” and other slurs during an FA Cup match between the Black Cats and Middlesbrough in January.

The Sunderland AFC season ticket holder was convicted of threatening behaviour at Teesside Magistrates’ Court in March and fined £450.

Smith, who appeared in the dock wearing his teams colours, accepted a banning order, but disputed its length, during a hearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court.

Laura Johnson, prosecuting, told the court Smith had a previous three-year ban imposed in February 2013 when he was a Hartlepool fan.

He went on to breach the ban in February 2015, when he attended a match in Liverpool.

The latest ban was prompted by Smith shouting abuse and making obscene gestures outside the Riverside Stadium.

Ms Johnson said: “A PC was assisting Sunderland fans to pass, as he did the defendant pushed his way past, chanting in a loud voice. He lunged towards officers.”

Nick Woodhouse, defending, said Smith was originally a Hartlepool fan, but switched allegiance to Sunderland after his first ban expired as he feared he would be a “marked man” at Hartlepool games.

At Tuesday’s hearing, magistrates banned Smith, of Fernville Close, Hartlepool, from all regulated football matches for four years.

Reacting to the result, PC Marty Ryan said: “Football related violence and disorder will not be tolerated by police.

“We will seek to put anyone who carries out this type of behaviour before the courts where they can be dealt with appropriately.”

Can you still attend Sunday League matches with a banning order? What level down the pyramid does it extend to?

Regulated Football Matches

Football matches that are the subject of controls under this legislation must be "regulated football matches" (s.14(2)). The Football Spectators (Prescription) Order 2000 sets out which matches are regulated matches in England and Wales and elsewhere.

Regulated matches in England and Wales mainly consist of any association football match in which, either team is a member of the Premier League, the Football League or the Football Conference (including its subdivisions, namely its Premiership Division and its North and South "feeder" Division). Regulated matches outside of England and Wales is any match involving either of the national teams, one of the teams from any of the divisions mentioned above, or which are part of a FIFA organised competition which any of the teams mentioned in this paragraph would be entitled to participate in.

An interesting comparison of their matchday income/free tickets.

Bournemouth’s matchday income was £5,188,000 with an average attendance of 11,182

West Brom’s matchday income was £6,769,000 with an average attendance of 25,367

Unless Bournemouth/West Brom have much variation in ticket prices or the number of concession tickets sold (which I’d doubt) - you can reasonably gestimate that the number of actual paying supporters at the mackems was around 30,000 - 32,000. Well in line with the 9,000 free tickets previously touted.

Interestingly, if their attendance is 15,000-20,000 next season and with the free STs being offered for kids their matchday income will actually be fairly average for the top end of League One and they’ll not have a huge financial advantage over the other sides.

With transfers still to be paid for, I’d assume Short will recoup some of his losses from the parachute payments and with a very high wagebill for that level they need their fans more than ever next season. Unless the investment levels from the new owners next season is very high for League One, which I don’t believe it will be, they could end up struggling to get back up.

Getting a ban for that man is pathetic, I hurled worse abuse at their players at Craven Cottage last week.

Context? Did he slap an officer, threaten an officer? Pushed his way past could mean anything. It seems he’s been banned and fined for abusive chanting. I don’t like the peado chants, it’s not something I would ever join in with or condone, but I’m grown up enough to know that in football fans chant a whole load of shit. I draw the line at racism and violence abviously, but shouting peado abuse? Fucking hell peodos themselves get less... does sum up their support though, no self awareness whatsoever given the AJ stuff.
