Mixed views on this. We missed his leadership, shit-housing and nastiness when he was out. Don't think the second half collapse against the mackems would have happened if he had played.

But he was making quite a few mistakes last season and was like running in treacle at times against pacy forwards. Means we need to replace both him and Burn next summer, and maybe Botman if he's still injury prone and been unable to regain his form from 2-3 years ago. If Thiaw is out for a few weeks/months we have zero pace at CB and that terrifies me.

Aye. Agree with this. Don't think another centre half will be anywhere near the top of the priority list now..especially with the 1 in 1 out policy I can keep reading about

Same, 35 in December & as much of a magnificent bastard he's been for us this seems a little stop gappy to me, however I know the square root of fuck all

I disagree, we need to sign in this window a Schar or Burn replacement, we cannot go into next year needing to sign 2 CBs.

Especially if we sign a young CB he will need 6 months bedding in period under Howe.

May if full back who signs can play in CB then maybe mitigate need in this window but maybe in winter we sign a CB

Great stuff. Hopefully we can use him more sparingly and keep him fresh for certain games. Hes an incredible professional and leader, a true legend of the club.

RCB: Schar/Thiaw

LCB: Burn/Botman

If we can add one more young CB to learn the ropes, I think thats perfect.

Quick look at last years league stats, average points per game with Schar starting:

Schar starting: 1.9 points per game

Schar not starting: 1.0 points per game

Other factors like Woltemade's form dropping and Bruno's injury mean it doesn't tell the whole truth in isolation, but the defensive fragility once going ahead (by far our biggest weakness last season) didn't seem to be a problem in the games he played.

Not saying its just down to the centre halves like but we barely kept a clean sheet and looked leaky as fuck last season. Don't think its anywhere near perfect mesel

great news imo, bit of a relief. Replacing him wouldn’t be cheap or easy and there are other priorities that need sorting first.

Incidentally, not sure why Wilson feels the need to say “we had some complex discussion but… etc.” in the release. Far too vague to mean anything but leaves an unnecessary question mark.

Its not down to the CBs whatsoever, aside the odd hiccup, which is normal.

Get in. What a boy.

Even if his injury has hampered him I'd be happy if he had a handful of appearances and was a presence in the leadership team.

Deserves a proper send off next year too. The best defender in the modern era for us.
