Interesting stuff, wouldn't be surprised if he turned it down.

He might. But it's interesting that it does show that Wilson is doing his job and we aren't just offering daft terms based on popularity and to keep everyone sweet.

less games now no Europe, loads of other work to do already it does massively kick the can down the road AGAIN if Schar gets a year so that means BDB and him are out of contract next summer.

Maybe who we get to cover LB/RB can also do CB cover if needs be?

This smacks of Eddie and this isnt a criticism of him either .

If it's Wilson I worry as it's been left until the last minute. important to note the noises from the itk journos has been Fabi isn't being renewed.

Completely agree, but beyond the keeper, it felt largely systemic rather than personnel issues.

I disagree, I saw so many issues with personnel as well.

Not to give any excuses but if he had of came back from the initial injury and played again maybe those discussions happen sooner. The fact he then broke down before his return shows caution on the clubs part and if it is reduced terms it does show a little bit of protection.

The player may want guarantees of playing time or a 2 year deal but as he goes for nothing and still has "something" about him as a player it does work in our current predicament, albeit as I put in my own post seem to kick the can down the road if we dont also start to plan (this window or the next) for life without both Schar and Burn.

Not usually a fan of the cheerleader role (dummett & Ritchie spring to mind) but with the loss of lascelles & trippier at the back, it might not be a bad idea to have another wise head around. I'd expect burn to be playing more than schar, and I think schar will be looking at his post playing career and what we can offer him to accelerate that. Tripps wanted to still play, I think this is a bit different.

What would you be looking to buy, thinking more RCB or LCB?

I do think there's a strong case to buy a CB, largely as Botman hasn't proved his fitness and our back ups are 34+.

Eddie really shouldn't be involved in the contract details though. His input should be limited to "Yes he is important to us" or "No, we need younger legs".

People reducing him to a cheerleader role are underestimating how good he still is imo

Eddie: “We’ve spoken to Fabian and his agent, and we are hoping for a successful outcome. We want him to stay, he’s been unbelievable for us.”

As we won't be in Europe think this is a good move.

Botman and Thiaw with Burn and Schar as more experienced options is perfectly fine.

Still think we might get a young prospect in too.

Problem is we don't know how good he still is. He may have lost another yard of pace which wasn't great to begin with.

After the rest he might come back

still faster than Bruno

we do need a cheerleader though.

so many of  the younger players have said how much they benefitted from having the likes of Tripps and Ritchie around.

We've been linked with some very young CBs. We may well bring one in to bed in with the view of eventually taking over from Burn/Schar next season.

Great role models if we do get one in.

Guy is a legend. Age creeping up is a nightmare. He was low cost, and delivered  for us,showed more skill and talent than most of defenders since 98.

You'd like to think our coaching team should have a good idea on that though.

We need to be looking for an experienced., quality, established centre back… basically someone the others can look up to and learn from… and preferably a leader who can help put a stop to leaking goals in the last few minutes of matches… sure they’re out there somewhere…

Quite happy about this. We have so many positions to sort out this summer. Trying to sign a goalkeeper, leftback, possibly two right backs, depending on what happens with Tino, a cm, and possibly two left wingers, is a lot to do especially if we’re struggling for cash.
